The Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, has called on state governments and relevant authorities to intensify the enforcement of road safety regulations, particularly regarding truck standards and driver conduct.

Speaking in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, on Wednesday, FRSC spokesman Olusegun Ogungbemide raised concerns over the poor condition of trucks on Nigerian roads, citing issues such as inadequate maintenance, speeding, and disregard for traffic laws as major contributors to road accidents.

His remarks followed the recent tanker explosion on the Nyanya-Mararaba Expressway, which was caused by brake failure in a Dangote Cement truck.

“The truck’s brakes failed, causing it to collide with vehicles in a gridlock, sparking a fatal inferno,” Ogungbemide said.

He noted that while the Federal Government has no national policy restricting the movement of articulated vehicles during specific hours, some states have implemented their own regulations.

“I am aware that different states now have their own regulations regarding the movement of articulated vehicles,” he stated, adding that the FCT, for instance, restricts such vehicles from highways between 3 p.m. and 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. and 12 p.m.

To enhance safety, Ogungbemide highlighted the FRSC’s Road Transport Safety Standardisation Scheme (RTSSS), introduced in 2007, which mandates pre-loading safety checks for petroleum, diesel, and gas trucks.

“No petroleum, diesel, or gas truck is expected to be loaded without our safety clearance,” he emphasized.

He also stressed the need to improve transport alternatives to reduce reliance on roadways.

“Until other modes of transport are developed, the risks on our roads will remain high,” he warned.

Ogungbemide reaffirmed the FRSC’s commitment to reducing accidents and announced that a full report on the Nyanya-Mararaba crash investigation would be released once completed.

The NIS Public Relations Officer, ACI A.S Akinlabi, confirmed the arrest, stating that the migrants; 40 males and 11 females were apprehended at their hideouts following credible intelligence.

According to preliminary investigations, the arrested individuals may have been victims of human trafficking and smuggling.

“None of them presented valid travel documents or proof of legal residency when questioned,” Akinlabi said.

He added that they are currently in custody for further profiling and investigation.

Denmark’s Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, will on Wednesday visit semi-autonomous Greenland for talks with the territory’s incoming government.

The visit comes after U.S. President Donald Trump’s repeated expressions of interest in controlling the Arctic island.

DAILY POST reports that Frederiksen begins her three-day trip less than a week after a visit to the territory by U.S. Vice President JD Vance received a frosty reception from authorities in Denmark and Greenland.

Greenland’s incoming Prime Minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, who won last month’s general election and will form a coalition government, has said he welcomes Frederiksen’s trip, stating on Monday that Denmark remains Greenland’s closest partner.

Relations between Greenland and Denmark have been strained after revelations in recent years of historical mistreatment of Greenlanders under colonial rule.

However, Trump’s interest in controlling Greenland, part of a growing international focus on competition for influence in the Arctic, has prompted Denmark to hasten work to improve ties with the island.

Nielsen said late on Monday that Greenland would strengthen its ties with Denmark until it could fulfill its ultimate wish to become a sovereign nation.

“Greenland wishes to establish a respectful relationship with the United States. Talking about annexation and talking about acquiring Greenland and not respecting the sovereignty is not respectful. So let’s start by being respectful to each other and build up a great partnership on everything,” he said.

Vance, during his visit to a U.S. military base in northern Greenland on Friday, accused Denmark of not doing a good job of keeping the island safe and suggested that the United States would better protect the strategically located territory.

Frederiksen, who has said it is up to the people of Greenland to decide their own future, called Vance’s description of Denmark unfair.

Israeli government on Wednesday announced a major expansion of military operations in Gaza, saying large areas of the enclave would be seized and added to its security zones, accompanied by large-scale evacuations of the population.

Israel’s leaders have been urged by signs of protest in Gaza against Hamas, the militant group which has controlled the enclave since 2007.

The expanded operation appeared at least partly aimed at increasing civilian pressure on its leaders.

Recall that an Israeli airstrike killed several people, including a Hezbollah official in Beirut on Tuesday.

According to a statement, Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said evacuations would take place from areas where there was fighting, while urging Gazans to eliminate Hamas and return Israeli hostages as the only way to end the war.

The Israeli military had already issued evacuation warnings to Gazans living around the southern city of Rafah and towards the city of Khan Yunis, telling them to move to the Al-Mawasi area on the shore, previously designated a humanitarian zone.

According to Israel’s Army Radio, the 36th division, sent to the Southern Command area last month to prepare for operations in Gaza, would take part in the operation.

Katz’s statement did not make clear how much land Israel intended to seize.

Israeli forces have already set up a significant buffer zone within Gaza, expanding an area that existed around the edges of the enclave before the war and adding a large security area in the so-called Netzarim corridor through the middle of Gaza.

Similarly, Israeli leaders have said they plan to facilitate voluntary departure of Palestinians from the enclave, after US President Donald Trump called for it to be permanently evacuated and redeveloped as a coastal resort under US control.

Katz’s remarks came after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu repeated calls for Hamas to disarm and said the application of military pressure was the best way to get back the remaining 59 hostages.

“I call on the residents of Gaza to act now to eliminate Hamas and return all the kidnapped. This is the only way to end the war,” Katz said.
