The Russian Defence Ministry said its air defences on Saturday repelled an attack by three Ukrainian drones on a compressor station that is part of the Turkstream pipeline system taking Russian gas to Europe.
This was contained in a statement, referring to the Russkaya station in southern Russia’s Krasnodar region.
“In repelling the attack, Russian air defences downed three Ukrainian drones at a safe distance from the compressor station.
“The compressor station is now carrying out the flow of gas on the Turkstream pipeline in normal conditions,” the statement said.
According to the Russian foreign ministry on its website, its Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov urged his Turkish counterpart, Hakan Fidan, to use all means at his disposal to prevent future attacks and Fidan pledged to do so.
Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto, whose country receives Russian gas through Turkstream, said on Facebook that Lavrov had informed him of the attack by telephone.
Szijjarto described the operation of Turkstream as critical to Hungary’s energy security, calling on the European Union to uphold guarantees that infrastructure linked to the 27-nation bloc would not come under attack.

President of France, Emmanuel Macron on Saturday called for calm after the clash between the US and Ukrainian leaders at the White House.
According to the French presidency, Macron had also spoken to British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, European Council President Antonio Costa and NATO chief Mark Rutte, on the eve of a meeting of European leaders on Ukraine on Sunday in London.
Recall that in an extraordinary Oval Office meeting on Friday, Trump threatened to withdraw support for Ukraine, three years after Russia invaded its smaller neighbour, alarming Europeans who fear a rushed ceasefire would embolden an expansionist Russia.
“I think that beyond the frayed nerves, everybody needs to calm down, show respect and gratitude, so we can move forward concretely, because what’s at stake is too important,” Macron said.
Macron and Starmer had taken the lead in Europe to convince Trump not to rush to a ceasefire and to provide security guarantees to Ukraine, presenting him with a plan to deploy peacekeepers in Ukraine during meetings in Washington this week.
Macron said that Zelenskyy had told him he was willing to restore dialogue with the United States, including on a deal giving the US access to revenues from Ukraine’s natural resources, but did not say what Trump told him in the call.
“America’s manifest destiny is to be alongside Ukrainians, I have no doubts about that. I want the Americans to understand that withdrawing support to Ukraine is not in their interest,” he said.
The French leader also said that at a planned European Union summit on March 6, he hoped there would be unanimous support for a joint debt plan at the EU level to raise several hundred billion euros for European defence.

Family sources said that Abdussalam died on Saturday after a brief illness and was buried at the Hajji Camp burial ground.
Our Correspondent reports that the special adviser is a native of Osun State, and was a graduate of accountancy from Bayero University, Kano.
He was said to have recently retired from the service of National Orthopedic Hospital, Dala, in Kano.
Abdullateef was also a special adviser from 2011 to 2015 to the than Governor of Kano State, Engr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

Senator Akpabio, who was speaking in Umuahia at the 70th birthday ceremony organised by Abia State government in honour of the former Deputy Governor of the State, described Abaribe as a man of integrity who loves his people and can take risk for them.
“Abaribe is a man who can sacrifice. He is a man who loves his people, Ndi Igbo.
“Senator Abaribe, when you signed the bail bond for Nnamdi Kanu, people were shocked and said why will a Senator take this kind of risk?
“When I asked you why did you do it? You said that you believe strongly that even if he runs away you can go to prison on his behalf because of what he stands for”, Akpabio said.
The Senate President declared that Governor Otti has played a good politics through the birthday honour and won the the heart of Abia South voters.
Also speaking, the Abia State Governor, Alex Otti thanked God for Abaribe’s life and described him as a man of courage, fearless and one who is worth celebrating, saying that Abia State government did not organize the birthday celebration for political reasons.
He added that he would host similar ceremonies for some great Abians, including Senator Chris Adighije, veteran musicians Bright Chimezie, Paulson Kalu, hold posthumous birthday of Jaja Nwa Chukwu, among others.
In his message, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe thanked God for preserving him and appreciated Governor Alex Otti for honouring him, even as he used the occasion to present his new book.

The husband of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, High Chief Emmanuel, has thrown his weight behind his wife over allegations against the Nigerian Senate President, Godswill Akpabio.
In a statement on Saturday, Uduaghan confirmed that Akpabio made sexual advances at his wife, Natasha.
According to him, he personally met Akpabio to stop harassing his wife sexually.
He added that despite an agreement by Akpabio to respect his wife, the issue had persisted.
“My wife has confided in me about her interactions with the Senate President, whom I considered a family friend.
“In response, I approached the matter with the utmost maturity and responsibility, as it is my duty as a traditional leader who has immense respect for constituted authority and upholds core family values to foster peace and harmony.
“I personally met with the Senate President and respectfully urged him to extend the courtesy and respect my wife deserves while also honouring the friendship between us. We reached an understanding and agreed to resolve the issue amicably.
“However, despite this agreement, my wife continued to express concerns about the harassment she has endured from the Senate President.
“I have unwavering faith in my wife’s loyalty and am fully committed to our marriage, which is grounded in love, compassion, and mutual respect. I would never trade her for anything, as she is the greatest joy of my life.
“I now respectfully urge the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Senate President to treat my beloved wife with the respect and dignity she truly deserves while the relevant authorities and the court determine the underlying issues,” he stated.
This comes after Natasha, during an interview on Arise Television on Friday, accused Akpabio of sexual harassment.
