Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Mr Ola Olukoyede, says Nigerians have the capacity to confront and conquer economic and financial crimes if they decide to do so.

A statement by EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, on Sunday, said Olukoyede made the comment in his goodwill message to Muslims in commemoration of the Eid- el- Fitr celebration.

According to him, tackling economic and financial crimes and other acts of corruption are achievable through the courage and commitments of Nigerians.

He also assured that the anti-corruption war is on course, maintaining that the EFCC is gaining more strength and speed in bringing economic and financial crimes to a halt.

The statement added, “Nigerians are stronger than corruption. No corrupt act can break our common resolve and determination.

“We have all it takes to confront and conquer economic and financial crimes.”

He congratulated Muslims and charged them to allow lessons of self- denial, discipline, sacrifice, love and purity of the Ramadan season to imbue in them greater readiness and commitment to shun corrupt practices.

“At Eid- el- Fitr, Allah’s benevolence and sacrifice are greatly magnified. May the lessons of love, peace, joy and celebration of the festival abide in us and may they imbue in us greater desire to shun corrupt practices,” the EFCC chairman added.

Olayinka said Wike was never keen on being Atiku’s running mate due to the enormous baggages the former vice president carried.

The Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media to Wike insisted that Atiku lied in his claim that he picked the former Governor of Delta State, Dr Ifeanyi Okowa, as his presidential running mate in the 2023 based on the report of the committee set up by the PDP.

Olayinka, in a statement on Sunday, said the comment by Atiku’s media office was face-saving and “an attempt to use further lies to defend Atiku’s previous lies”.

Olayinka said, “The report of the committee was released so as to set the records straight, and this has made Atiku and his men to confess that in selecting his running mate, he (Atiku) did not follow the report of the committee set up by the PDP. He simply picked who he wanted, not who the party wanted.

“By saying that ‘there were no laid down rules or laws on the selection process of a running mate. Committees, consultations, and recommendations are advisory in nature. The final decision rests solely and exclusively with the presidential candidate, in this case, Atiku Abubakar. It is a constitutional and strategic choice, not a popularity contest,’ Atiku’s Media Office has confirmed that their principal actually lied and never had any regard for the PDP as a party.

“It therefore gladdens our hearts that we have been able to establish that Atiku lied and he is not a man to be trusted. That he chose to lie during the Holy Month of Ramadan is however between him and Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala).

“As for his choice of running mate in 2019 and 2023, it is our position that Atiku, as the PDP candidate, had the right to make whatever choice, and he should be able to defend his choice and be honest for once to accept the consequences, not trying to misrepresent facts to justify the choice he made.

“It is also to be reiterated that just as Atiku, the loser in the election, has said he has no regret over the choice he made, Wike too has no regret over his choice.

“Therefore, no one is harboring any personal ill-feeling against Atiku for failing with the choice he made, and no one should also harbour ill-feeling against Wike for succeeding with the choice he made.

“Also, as for us, no ego is bruised, no bitterness too. Just a clear case of we making our choice and you making your own choice. But more than two years after, you are now trying to defend your own choice of failure with lies.”

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, has strongly condemned the mob killing of 16 hunters in Uromi, Edo State, vowing that those responsible will be brought to justice.

The victims, who were returning from Rivers State to Kano State to celebrate Eid-el-Fitr, were reportedly attacked and killed by a mob on March 28, 2025.

The incident has sparked outrage among northern groups, state governments, and lawmakers.

In a statement issued on Sunday by the Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, the CDS stressed that the tragedy could have been avoided if authorities had been consulted to verify the victims’ identities.

“General Christopher Musa has condemned in strong terms the unfortunate killing of hunters while on transit in Edo State. The incident, which occurred on 28 March 2025, could have been avoided if the appropriate authorities were notified and involved in ascertaining the identity of the victims,” the statement read.

He extended condolences to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the families of the victims, urging Nigerians to avoid mob justice and instead rely on security agencies for conflict resolution.

“The CDS also urged Nigerians not to take laws into their hands but always revert to constituted authorities in matters that affect security. The Nigeria Police, military, and other security agencies are well trained to handle such matters,” Musa stated.

The Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN), he assured, will work with the police and other security agencies to ensure justice is served.

Additionally, he warned local hunters and vigilante groups to register with law enforcement agencies to regulate the possession of firearms.

“He warned that all local hunters and vigilante groups should register with the police, DSS, AFN, and any other agencies mandated by law to regulate the possession of firearms,” he said.

Musa called for calm and urged citizen support for security agencies in their efforts to maintain law and order.

The Nigerian Army troops of 6 Brigade, in collaboration with operatives of the 67 Police Mobile Force (PMF), have rescued 20 kidnapped victims following a gun battle with armed criminals along the Takum-Mararaba Road in Taraba State.

According to a post by security analyst Zagazola Makama on X on Sunday, the operation took place on Saturday night at about 9:50 p.m. after security forces received credible intelligence about a kidnapping incident in Muji town.

Makama reported that the troops, supported by PMF personnel stationed at Samta, swiftly mobilized and confronted the kidnappers.

“Overpowered by the superior firepower of the security operatives, the assailants abandoned the victims and fled into the forest.,”he said.

Among those rescued were Yakubu Usman of Angwan Abuja and Godwin Peter of Angwan Dadin Kowa, who sustained injuries and were rushed to the hospital for treatment.

The troops also recovered vehicles abandoned at the scene as efforts to track down the fleeing criminals continue.

In a statement released in Kaduna by its Chairman, Rev. John Hayab, and Secretary-General, Bishop Mohammed Naga, Northern CAN acknowledged the spiritual importance of Ramadan, describing it as a period of profound devotion and personal reflection.

“The spiritual activities are significant and rewarding to every faithful, especially those who embrace the teachings as instructed in the Holy Books,” the statement read.

The association also expressed deep grief over the recent killing of 16 travelers in Uromi, Edo State, describing the incident as a tragic loss to humanity.

“The pain and anguish their families and loved ones must endure are unbearable, and we can only imagine the depth of their sufferings. May God grant them comfort, strength, and solace during this darkest of times,” Northern CAN said.

“As Christians, we stand in solidarity with their families, recognizing that this act of violence is not only an attack on any region but on our shared humanity,” the statement noted.

The group appealed for peace amid rising tensions, urging those considering retaliation to seek alternative, non-violent solutions.

“Revenge is not a solution but a recipe for further chaos and destruction. It is the innocent who would suffer again, and the cycle of violence would only worsen,” CAN warned.

Additionally, the association condemned the use of stereotypes and divisive rhetoric to justify criminal acts, urging Nigerians to reject narratives that perpetuate mistrust and violence.

“Evil is evil, and criminals must be treated as such without recourse to identities that criminals use to evade justice,” the statement concluded.
