Security has been beefed up at the Rivers House of Assembly in Port Harcourt as the lawmakers are expected to resume sitting under the leadership of Martin Amaewhule.

According to Channels TV, the Speaker of the Assembly, Amaewhule released the notice of the sitting on Monday morning.

Recall that the Supreme Court on Friday ordered the Amaewhule-led faction of the Rivers State Assembly and other elected members of the House to resume sitting unhindered.

On Monday morning, multiple squads of policemen and operatives of the Department of State Services, DSS, were observed at the Assembly Complex.

Although it is unclear what Monday’s plenary is about, it may not be unconnected to issues about local government administration in Rivers State.

Students in Ogun State have expressed their satisfaction at the revamping of technical colleges across the state, saying it would boost technical education.

They said the move would produce skilled workforce capable of meeting the demands of both local and international markets.

The students equally noted that aside increasing enrollment and enabling students to compete favorably with their counterparts across the country, the move would contribute significantly to closing the skills gap nationwide.

Recall that the state government, through the Commissioner for Education, Science, and Technology, Abayomi Arigbabu, had announced that rehabilitation of technical colleges in the state had commenced.

The commissioner explained that the exercise was meant to attract more students to technical education.

Speaking on behalf of the students, the Chairman, National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Ogun State Joint Campus Committee and the National President of the National Association of Ogun State Students (NAOSS), Gabriel Francis and Kehinde Thomas, in a joint statement on Monday, commended Governor Dapo Abiodun.

They described the move as a laudable step towards breathing a fresh air into the state-owned technical colleges.

The students opined that rehabilitation of the structures would, in no small measure, contribute to the learning skills of students.

Parts of the statement read, “The ongoing rehabilitation work and the upgrading of facilities would enhance practical learning, foster creativity, and provide a conducive environment for academic excellence.

“Apart from helping to attract more students to technical education, would also increase their employability and prepare them for entrepreneurial opportunities in various industries.

“NAOSS and NANS want to commend the Ogun State governor, Dapo Abiodun, for his administration’s move to revamp technical colleges across the state. This move is not only right, but, timely, especially now that technical manpower and skills are in high demand.

“The students associations strongly believe that rehabilitation exercise would go a long way in boosting technical education towards producing a skilled workforce capable of meeting the demands of both local and international markets.”

The students however urged Governor Abiodun to enhance security around campuses of tertiary institutions in Ogun to prevent abduction of students by kidnappers, who now target campuses to carry out their nefarious acts.

Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, has approved a two-year tax waiver for traders in the state, particularly those affected by the September 2024 floods and the fire outbreak at Maiduguri’s Monday Market.

The Chairman of the Borno State Board of Internal Revenue, Professor Ibrahim Bello, announced the decision in a statement issued to journalists in Maiduguri on Monday.

“This measure takes effect from the month of Ramadan to ease economic hardship and improve livelihoods,” Bello stated.

He explained that the decision was aimed at revitalizing the local economy and reducing the financial burden on traders.

“The government recognizes the struggles of traders who have suffered losses due to natural disasters. This tax waiver will give them the opportunity to recover and reinvest in their businesses without the additional pressure of tax payments,” he added.

Bello further emphasized that the state government expects traders to extend the benefits of this relief to the general public by making essential goods more affordable during and after Ramadan.

Governor Zulum reiterated his commitment to supporting businesses affected by disasters, stressing that the tax waiver is part of a broader effort to stimulate economic growth in the state.

“This decision is about giving our traders a chance to rebuild. We want them to stabilize their businesses without the added financial burden of taxes,” Zulum stated.

However, he assured residents that despite the waiver, the government remains committed to ongoing development projects funded by tax revenues.

“The taxes we collect are used for key infrastructure projects such as road construction and environmental improvements in areas like Jiddari, Umarari, GRA, Bulumkutu, and Chad Basin neighborhoods,” Bello explained.

He further noted that Borno State has made significant progress in strengthening its tax system and ensuring accountability in revenue utilization.

A civil society organization, CSO, Citizens Network For Peace and Development in Nigeria, CNPD, has urged the Senate not to be distracted by the sexual harassment allegation levelled against Senate President, Godswill Akpabio by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

In a statement made available to journalists in Abuja on Monday by its Executive Director, Francis Okereke Wainwei, CNPD charged the Senate to remain focused on discharging its constitutional responsibilities to the Nigerian people.

The CSO noted that the call was necessitated by indications that the primary aim of the sexual harassment allegation might be to escape punishment from the Senate Committee on Ethics and Privileges, which is investigating Natasha for breach of the rules of the Senate.

“It seems to be a desperate attempt to divert attention from her disciplinary proceedings. She is trying to manipulate the Senate and the Nigerian people to avoid punishment for her unruly behaviour.

“It is our highly considered opinion that the sexual harassment allegation is a grand ploy by Sen. Natasha to escape punishment from the Senate Committee on Ethics and Privileges, for her flagrant breach of the Senate rules. She wants to use the sexual harassment allegation to distract the Senate committee and attract sympathy from both the Senate and the Nigerian people as a victim of illegitimate use of power by the Senate President,” the CSO said.

Further questioning the sincerity of Natasha’s actions, the group raised some questions on the issue.

“Why has she not used the due process in the Senate to pursue redress for the sexual harassment that supposedly took place over a year ago? Why did she not confide in the other female senators and seek their support in fighting against her harassment? Why is the sexual harassment allegation coming up now that she has been summoned for disciplinary action by the Senate Committee on Ethics and Privileges?”

The CSO further observed that a critical analysis shows contradictions in claims made during Natasha’s Arise TV interview and the statement released by her husband,High Chief Emmanuel Uduaghan.

“The claim by her husband that his wife doesn’t hide anything from him contradicts her claim of not telling her husband about the sexual harassment till now,” the CSO noted.

CNPD, in the same vein, pointed out that Natasha had in the past made similar unsubstantiated allegations of sexual harassment against prominent persons such as Reno Omokri, Dino Melanie and Yahaya Bello.

“She made those allegations without evidence and couldn’t substantiate them but went ahead to give them serious media hype. It has become a notorious fact that anytime she needs public sympathy to achieve a desired goal, she brings up sexual harassment allegations because many people buy into stories of sexual harassment without critically analyzing the credibility and veracity of such claims.

“Sen. Natasha’s claim of being victimized for sexual reasons doesn’t hold any water and hasn’t been backed up with any concrete evidence. For instance, Sen. Natasha claimed that the monthly imprest fund meant for the daily running of the Senate Committee on Local Content was kept in the bank throughout her tenure as chairperson, which is an allusion to the fact that the Committee didn’t do any work during her time as Chairperson. Such a claim is an obvious admission that she was not productive and effective in running the affairs of the committee and therefore,deserved her removal.

“It is therefore, malicious for her to claim that she was removed as the committee chairperson because of her refusal to agree to the alleged sexual advances of the Senate President. Also the conventional change of seats in the Senate that affected other senators too, can’t be rightly seen as an action targeted at her because of her refusal to acquiesce to the alleged sexual advances of the Senate President.

“We are therefore calling on the Senate to religiously adhere to the strict enforcement of it’s rules and extant parliamentary procedures. This is to ensure the sustenance of its parliamentary integrity and due process without being swayed negatively by any extraneous distraction or sentiment.”

CNPD equally faulted former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, for suggesting that Akpabio should step aside as Senate President for the deputy to preside over the investigation of the sexual harassment allegation. The CSO said Saraki’s suggestion was not in line with the rules of the Senate and parliamentary procedures.

Accusing Saraki of playing politics, the group said, “Mr Saraki is aware that before any allegation or any matter can be investigated by the Senate, it must be raised in the Senate or formally presented before it. This matter was never raised or presented in the Senate, so how can the Senate investigate it?”

In a statement by his Media Aide, Oluwatosin Osho, Ayodele noted that he is unsure of when the outbreak will occur but stressed that world leaders need to be cautious and prepare for the impending pandemic.

“I am seeing another disease coming from China that will cause the world to use face masks. It will come from an animal, and I want to warn powerful countries to expect it because it will spread.

“This will lead to another partial lockdown. I foresee a blackout in parts of China and bridge collapses,” he stated.

Primate Ayodele also warned the United Nations and several countries around the world about what they will face in the coming days.
