Israeli fire kills two Palestinians in Gaza amid ceasefire impasse
Israeli fire on Monday killed no fewer than two people in Rafah and injured at least three others in Khan Younis, in southern Gaza, raising fears among Palestinians that the ceasefire could collapse entirely after Israel imposed a total blockade on the war-torn enclave.
DAILY POST recalls that the first phase of a ceasefire between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas, which began in January, ended over the weekend with no agreement on what will happen next.
Additionally, aid trucks were stuck in a long queue at Egypt’s Rafah border crossing on Sunday after Israel blocked them from entering Gaza, as tensions over a truce with Hamas escalated.
Hamas has insisted that the agreed second phase must now begin, leading to a permanent Israeli withdrawal and an end to the war.
Instead, Israel has proposed a temporary extension into April, under which Hamas would release more hostages in exchange for Palestinian detainees, without immediate discussions on Gaza’s future.
Later on Monday, at a news conference, Hamas official Osama Hamdan said Israel’s request to extend the first phase of the ceasefire was effectively resetting negotiations to square one.
“The mediators and guarantors bear full responsibility for preventing [Israeli Prime Minister] Netanyahu from sabotaging all efforts made to reach the agreement and for protecting the agreement from collapsing,” Hamdan said.

Suspected Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists abducted Professor Abubakar Eljuma of the Nigerian Army University, Biu (NAUB) and several other passengers on Sunday along the Damaturu-Biu road near Kamuya village.
According to Vanguard, Professor Eljuma, the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, is among the top contenders for the soon-to-be-vacant Vice-Chancellor position at NAUB.
Kamuya village, located about 10 kilometers from Buratai, the hometown of former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Yusuf Tukur Buratai (Rtd), has witnessed multiple attacks over the years, including abductions, roadside bombings, and killings.
A security source reported that the assailants intercepted two Golf cars and a Borno Express bus, taking an unspecified number of travelers.
While female passengers were reportedly released, the male passengers, including Professor Eljuma, were taken captive.
“We request your prayers in this holy month of Ramadan for their quick release,” the source added.
A staff of NAUB, speaking anonymously, confirmed the abduction on Monday, stating that the university management was holding an emergency meeting regarding the situation.

Parents have criticised the governments of Katsina, Kebbi, Kano and Bauchi for shutting down schools during the ongoing Ramadan fasting.
They described the decision by the affected four state governments as shocking and completely unwise.
The National President of the Parent-Teacher Association of Nigeria (PTAN), Alhaji Haruna Danjuma, said, “I cannot imagine, let alone understand, what could have led the governors of these four states to make such a decision, especially at this crucial time when SS3 students are preparing for four major public examinations: the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME, conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB; the Senior School Certificate Examination, SSCE, conducted by WAEC and NECO; and the examination conducted by NABTEB.”
Danjuma explained that everyone understands the importance of these exams to students, saying that they need adequate preparation to perform well in the affected examinations.
He further explained that none of the examination bodies would lower their standards for any reason, including Ramadan fasting, pointing out that Nigeria operates a uniform school calendar nationwide, with students expected to cover a specific syllabus within a set period.
Danjuma questioned why the governors would shut down schools and ask students to stay at home for Ramadan fasting while their peers in the other 32 states and the Federal Capital Territory continue attending classes and preparing themselves for any examination that will come.
He said, “This decision, to us parents, is totally unwise and unacceptable and should be reversed. The action also infringes on the rights of non-Muslim students in those states to access education.”
According to him, such an unwarranted holiday should not even be considered in these four northern states that are already struggling with a high number of out-of-school children.
Danjuma questioned the fate of other civil servants who continue working and contributing to their respective state economies while teachers enjoy a five-week holiday, saying that it is another major issue and an unfair treatment of other civil servants in those states. He stressed that political leaders should think carefully before making decisions of public importance.
He noted that Nigeria has not yet fully recovered from the impact of the COVID-19 lockdown across various sectors, particularly education, emphasising that efforts should focus on bridging learning gaps rather than widening them.
He then urged the governors of the four affected states—Dikko Umar (Katsina), Abba Kabir Yusuf (Kano), Nasir Idris (Kebbi) and Bala Mohammed (Bauchi)—to reconsider their decisions and allow students to return to school so they can continue their studies alongside their peers in other parts of the country.
He stated that education is not a sector to be toyed with or politicised.

Russia’s defence ministry shared a video of what it described as an Iskander-M ballistic missile strike on a camp in Dnipropetrovsk region on Saturday, stressing that it inflicted heavy casualties.
Ukraine’s army chief, Oleksandr Syrskyi, via
Telegram said that Russia had struck with cluster munitions but did not disclose casualty details.
The State Bureau of Investigations, Ukrainian law enforcement agency said it had opened a criminal investigation into possible negligence over the attack, without giving details of what wrongdoing might have taken place.
Meanwhile, Ukraine’s land forces commander Mykhailo Drapatyi said on Telegram, those responsible would be found.
“We are witnessing untimely decisions and unlearned lessons. No one will hide behind explanations or formal reports,” Drapatyi said.
According to the army chief, a training centre head and a commander of a military unit were suspended from duties, with checks ordered into implementation of a ban on outside meetings.
It was gathered that during three years of Russia’s full-scale invasion, Moscow’s forces have inflicted casualties various times in attacks on Ukrainian military educational institutions and various formal outdoor gatherings.
