The roof of Methodist Church Nigeria, All Saints Cathedral Umuawa Alaocha, Umuahia East Diocese in Umuahia North LGA of Abia State has collapsed during a strong wind that heralded an evening rain.

This is even as youths of the church who were holding an important meeting inside the Cathedral when the roof collapsed, miraculously escaped death.

Economic trees, electric poles and the roof of some residential buildings were also destroyed by the wind.

Conducting Journalists round the 800 seater capacity cathedral, the Bishop of the Umuahia East of Methodist Church, Rt Rev Best Okike said the incident happened without notice, adding that the youths of the church were holding their weekly meeting at the time of the incident.

“The tornado, I should call it had destroyed everything.

“The speed of the wind is terrible and people were inside here, holding a meeting, they managed to struggle out,” Bishop Okike said.

Narrating an eye witness account, Very Rev Bright Madu, Cathedral Administrator, who said he was with the youths during their meeting when the incident took place, explained that they saw the falling off before the sudden collapse of the iron roof.

“As the meeting was ongoing, suddenly, the ceiling started falling off so we became afraid. And before you know it, that heavy wind, the roof collapsed immediately. But God been so kind, we ran away from it. Though one of us sustained an injury but there was no death casualty.”

According to Anene, all area commanders, divisional police officers, and tactical commanders have been directed to provide tight security within their jurisdictions.

Former Governor of Anambra State and presidential candidate of Labour Party in the 2023 election, Mr. Peter Obi, has visited victims of the Onitsha Market fire incident.

Recall that fire last week gutted parts of two separate markets in Onitsha – electronics market at Iweka Road and warehouses at Ifejirika Street, within the Main Market.

During the visit, Obi sympathized with the owners of the warehouses and traders who own the shops where the incident happened.

He described the experience as heartbreaking, lamenting the magnitude of loss suffered by the traders. He observed that goods worth several billions of naira were consumed by the inferno.

Obi expressed concern over the impact of the disaster on the victims, many of whom rely solely on their businesses for livelihood.

He said: “I am calling on well to do Nigerian, those who can should come to the aid of these people. In moments like this, our shared humanity must prevail.

“Let us come together to restore hope, rebuild livelihoods, and reaffirm the spirit of community that defines us.”

One of the affected traders, Mr. Jeremiah Nwabueze, who showed the presidential candidate around, expressed gratitude to Obi for the visit, describing it as deeply consoling.

He noted that Obi’s presence brought a sense of comfort and solidarity at a time of immense loss.

A former governor of Oyo State, Rasidi Ladoja has declared that, contrary to insinuations, the recently declared state of emergency in Rivers State is not a threat to democracy.

Ladoja who doubled as the Otun Olubadan of Ibadanland made this declaration while addressing journalists at his Bodija Ibadan residence on Sunday.

Speaking shortly after the Eld-el-Fitri prayers, Ladoja insisted that President Bola Tinubu has his own reason for taking the decision.

He said that the state of emergency is not in any way a threat to democracy contrary to what many people have been saying.

Ladoja while speaking further, maintained that it is time for the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike and the suspended governor, Siminialayi Fubara, to sit together and chart a way forward.

He advised them to use the period of six months to settle all their differences.

“The state of emergency in Rivers State is not a threat to democracy at all. The President has his reason for doing it. It is not a threat to democracy. It is a warning to other governors to sit tight.

“Now, there is relative peace in Rivers State.

“I believe everything will be stabilised in the next six months.

“It is now time for Wike and Fubara to sit down and talk and say what are we fighting for? They should sit down and talk.

Residents of Umuonyima community in Owerri Municipal Council of Imo State have staged a protest against the demolition of the Old Timber Market by the state government.

Speaking with journalists, the President General of the Community, Christian Anukam, said that they were protesting against inhumane action meted on the community by the state government over the demolition of the ancient timber market in Owerri.

The PG expressed sadness over what he termed impromptu action on the side of the government for not informing occupants of the place ahead of time to enable them safeguard their wares.

“They came and informed us just a day before the demolition with one of the governor’s aides telling us that the instruction was to bring everything down,” Anukam said.

He pointed out that the community supported the APC-led administration of Hope Uzodinma and wondered why the state government decided to treat them in such manner by not allowing tenants trading in the market the opportunity to secure their goods before the demolition.

Anukam maintained that a one-day notice is not enough to enable occupants move their wares out of the area.

One of the community leaders, Paschal Ugwuanyi said they just learnt that Owerri Capital Development Authority (OCDA) officials were coming to demolish the place without properly informing the community.

According to him, the land was released to them since 2007 by the then administration purposely for the market. He stressed that they were surprised at the turn of events.

Another community leader, Prince Mike Ukaegbu, said they were on a peaceful demonstration because the land is the only market where the community and the traders make their daily living.

He pleaded with the state government to give more time to enable occupants secure their goods while looking for alternatives.

Ukaegbu further pleaded on the government to consider their pleas as they are also citizens of the state.

“We are in support of the government of Senator Hope Uzodimma,” he submitted.

Other community leaders who spoke to journalists, including the traditional head of the clan, disclosed that the notice of the demolition was impromptu and pleaded that there should have been an earlier notice before the action.

Recall that the state government, through the Owerri Capital Development Authority (OCDA), had said it will commence demolition exercise at the Old Timber Market.

According to the General Manager of OCDA, Frank Nkem, prior to the demolition, a 21-day notice was given to the occupants, which he said the occupants refused to adhere to.

Nkem said that during the last visit to the area, he toured the premises and engaged with the leadership to reiterate the need to comply with the notice to vacate the illegal occupation, which he said has expired.

He said the government is more concerned over how the area has allegedly become a breeding ground for criminal activities, including gun-running, drug peddling and other unlawful practices.

Nkem added that despite the official relocation of traders to the Naze Industrial Market many years ago, that remnant of the traders had remained recalcitrant, refusing to comply with the relocation order.

It was gathered that since Israel resumed its attacks in Gaza on March 18, hundreds of Palestinians have been killed and tens of thousands have been forced to evacuate areas in northern Gaza where they had returned following the ceasefire agreement in January.

Netanyahu said Israel was demanding that Hamas lay down its arms and said its leaders would be allowed to leave Gaza.

He gave no detail on how long Israeli troops would remain in the enclave but repeated that Hamas’ military and government capacities must be crushed.

“We will ensure general security in the Gaza Strip and enable the implementation of the Trump plan, the voluntary emigration plan. That is the plan, we do not hide it, we are ready to discuss it at any time,” he added.

The event took place at the Presidential Banquet Hall of the State House in Abuja.

According to a video clip posted by Lere Olayinka, the Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media to the minister, Wike presented an Eid-el-Fitr congratulatory card to Tinubu during the event.

DAILY POST reports that Wike’s presence at the event puts to rest the rumour of his alleged ill health.

There are claims on the social media that the minister collapsed at an event in Abuja.

Olayinka had, however, told DAILY POST that the minister did not collapse.
