According to the US Geological Survey, USGS, the quake occurred about 100 kilometres northeast of Tonga’s main island.

Meanwhile, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued an alert that hazardous waves could affect coastlines within 300 kilometres of the epicentre.

At the time of filing this report, there were no immediate reports of damage.

President Bola Tinubu has appointed Dr Ibrahim Yahaya Oloriegbe as Chairman of the National Health Authority Insurance Authority, NHIA.

A statement by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy on Sunday, noted that the appointment of the former Kwara Central Senator will be for an initial term of four years.

Onanuga said the appointment took effect on March 11, 2025.

He recalled that Dr Oloriegbe represented Kwara Central Senatorial District at the 9th Senate of the National Assembly.

He holds a Master’s in Coaching and Consultation from the University of Oxford, UK, and HEC, Paris, and a Bachelor’s of Medicine and Surgery from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Kaduna State.

He is a member of the Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, Association of General and Private Medical Practitioners of Nigeria (AGPMPN), Nigeria Veneral Disease Association, Guild of Medical Directors of Nigeria, International Aids Society (IAS), and the Africa Health Leadership and Management Network.

PFN condemns killing of travellers in Edo, demands justice for victims

The National Secretary of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, PFN, Bishop David Bakare, has condemned in strong terms the killing of 16 travelling hunters intercepted by local vigilantes in Uromi community, Esan North Local Government of Edo state.

Speaking to newsmen on Sunday in Kaduna, Bakare called for thorough investigations into the ungodly act to ensure that the perpetrators are fished out and brought to justice.

The clergyman appealed against reprisal attacks, pointing out that two wrongs cannot make a right.

He expressed condolences to the families of the victims and urged the authorities to ensure that the culprits are brought to book to serve as deterrent to future occurrences.

According to him, “We strongly condemn this barbaric and ungodly act of killing travellers under any circumstances. Even if they were kidnappers; that does not warrant taking the law into our hands; the right thing was to hand them over to law enforcement agents for proper investigation and legal action.”

He suggested that thorough investigation must be carried out on the matter to ensure that the culprits are brought to book, no matter who they may be, while appealing against reprisal act, saying that two wrongs won’t make a right.

The PFN National Secretary stated that their prayers are with the families of the victims, saying that Nigeria needs all the peace at this material time.

DAILY POST reports that on Thursday March 27, the hunters, said to be of northern extraction were travelling from Elele, Rivers State to Kano for Sallah when they were intercepted by a vigilante group in Uromi area.

The vigilante group was said to have raised the alarm that they were kidnappers after they found dane guns in the truck the hunters were travelling in, leading to a mob attack.

Lagos on high alert as diphtheria outbreak spreads, authorities intensify response

Lagos State is on high alert following a diphtheria outbreak that has resulted in 10 confirmed cases between January 1 and March 27, 2025.

With the Eid-el-Fitr and Easter celebrations approaching, health authorities are ramping up containment efforts to prevent further spread.

Providing an update over the weekend, Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, revealed that out of 76 samples tested, 10 returned positive, while 63 were negative. “An additional three samples collected on March 26 are still awaiting results,” he added.

The outbreak has been reported across multiple Local Government Areas (LGAs), with Eti-Osa identified as the hardest hit, recording 44 suspected cases. Other affected areas include Alimosho, Badagry, Ikorodu, Kosofe, Ojo, Mushin, and Lagos Island.

In response to the outbreak, all confirmed cases have been placed under medical supervision, with treatment ongoing. Prof. Abayomi emphasized the importance of strict adherence to health protocols, stating: “For public safety, all confirmed cases must remain in isolation for treatment.”

To mitigate the spread, 21 patients have received the life-saving Diphtheria Antitoxin (DAT), with King’s College, Eti-Osa, accounting for 14 of these treatments. Other recipients include individuals from Lagos State Model School, Meiran, and affected areas in Alimosho, Kosofe, and Badagry.

Prof. Abayomi noted that cases peaked in the 3rd, 4th, and 10th weeks of 2025, with four confirmed cases each week. However, recent weeks have shown a decline, suggesting that containment measures are having an impact.

Authorities have ramped up contact tracing efforts, identifying 118 individuals who may have been exposed to the infection. So far, 100 have been successfully tracked, while 18 remain unaccounted for. Additionally, 36 individuals across affected LGAs have received prophylactic treatment to curb further transmission.

Health officials have also mapped out key locations linked to confirmed cases, including: King’s College, Eti-Osa; Lagos State Model School, Meiran; Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Mushin; De-Emmaculate School, Mile 12; and Gbara Junior Secondary School, Eti-Osa.

Vaccination efforts remain in full force, targeting at-risk individuals, suspected cases, and frontline healthcare workers. So far, 36,310 people have been vaccinated, comprising 7,473 children (aged 9-17 years) and 28,837 adults, including 13,633 health workers.

With Eid-el-Fitr, Easter, and school holidays on the horizon, health officials are urging residents to exercise caution. Prof. Abayomi advised Lagosians to maintain high hygiene standards, frequently wash their hands, use sanitizers, and avoid large gatherings.

He also highlighted key diphtheria symptoms; persistent cough, fever, sore throat, neck swelling, and the presence of thick grey or white patches in the throat—stressing that early detection is crucial. “Immediate medical attention can save lives and prevent further spread,” he warned.

Treatment for all suspected and confirmed cases remains free at designated government health facilities.

Commending Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s swift intervention, Prof. Abayomi praised the state government’s decisive actions in curbing the outbreak. He also acknowledged the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), World Health Organization (WHO), and UNICEF for their technical and logistical support.

Reaffirming the state’s commitment to public health, he assured residents: “We will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide regular updates. Lagosians are urged to stay informed and comply with all public health advisories.”
