Troops of the 6 Division, Nigerian Army, have arrested 39 suspected oil thieves and destroyed 18 illegal refining sites in a sustained crackdown against crude oil theft and related crimes in the Niger Delta region.

The Acting Deputy Director, 6 Division Army Public Relations, Lieutenant Colonel Danjuma Jonah Danjuma, said the operation was conducted between March 24 and 30, 2025, in conjunction with sister security agencies.

In a statement, Danjuma said security forces also confiscated over 60,000 litres of stolen petroleum products and dismantled illegal refining infrastructure.

According to him, in Rivers State, troops intercepted an inbuilt fabricated twin tank containing 18,000 litres of stolen crude along Ochokocho Road in Etche Local Government Area.

He added that a Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) Diesel container truck with registration number LXA 44 XA was seized while attempting to smuggle stolen petroleum products concealed in bags of sawdust.

Danjuma stated that the suspects abandoned the vehicle and fled upon sighting security forces.

He reiterated that further anti-oil theft operations along the Imo River led to the dismantling of several illegal refining sites, with over 15,000 litres of stolen products recovered.

The crackdown extended to Rumuekpe Forest in Ahoada East LGA, where two refining sites were destroyed and 2,800 litres of stolen crude oil were confiscated.

Similar operations were carried out in Ebocha, Omoku (Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni LGA), and Jelikri Creek in Degema Local Government Area, where illegal refining sites, drum ovens, hoses, and metal pipes were destroyed.

The Army statement also highlighted significant breakthroughs in Bayelsa State, particularly in Yenagoa LGA, where two illegal refining sites containing over 8,000 litres of stolen crude in drums and sacks were dismantled.

In Southern Ijaw LGA, troops uncovered another illegal operation, recovering 1,500 litres of crude oil and 300 litres of illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO).

Meanwhile, in Delta State, the fight against crude oil theft continued at Egbokodo Itsekiri Community in Warri South Local Government Area, where troops seized several jerricans filled with illegally refined AGO and destroyed storage materials used in the illicit trade.

In Akwa Ibom State, the statement noted that troops had dominated the operational landscape, preventing criminals from operating freely.

Speaking on the operation, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the division, Major General Emmanuel Emekah, reiterated the army’s commitment to eradicating crude oil theft.

“Our troops will continue to hunt down oil thieves and ensure the safety of Nigeria’s resources. Anyone engaging in illegal refining must turn a new leaf or be prepared to face the full wrath of the law,” he warned.

Israeli police have announced the arrest of two top aides to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as part of the ongoing ‘Qatargate’ investigation into suspected unlawful ties between Netanyahu’s inner circle and Qatar.

The suspects, identified by Hebrew-language media as Yonatan Urich and Eli Feldstein, were taken into custody earlier today, according to a brief police statement.

The arrests are linked to an investigation by Lahav 433, Israel’s national crime unit, and the Shin Bet security agency.

Authorities are probing suspected ties between Netanyahu’s senior aides and Qatari interests.

Due to a court-imposed gag order, further details remain undisclosed.

The ‘Qatargate’ scandal gained traction following reports that Feldstein, Netanyahu’s former spokesman, allegedly compromised national security by stealing and leaking classified IDF documents.

The government, affirming reported rising cases of rabies in the affected communities, cautioned residents to be watchful, as the situation has serious public health implications.

The Permanent Secretary of the state Ministry of Livestock and Aquaculture Development, Dr. Amin Suleiman, told newsmen that the ministry has received reports of dogs biting both humans and other dogs.

“Affected individuals are currently receiving medical treatment under the close supervision of the ministry’s Rapid Response Squad,” the permanent secretary disclosed.

He added that suspected rabid dogs have been quarantined at an approved government veterinary clinic in Yola for further examination.

He assured that his ministry is working closely with the state Ministry of Health and Human Development to contain the outbreak.

“We urge pet owners, particularly those with dogs and cats, to remain vigilant and take their animals to the nearest veterinary clinic for vaccination,” he said.

He further advised pet owners to watch for unusual behaviors in their animals, such as withdrawal, sudden aggression, or excessive docility.

He appealed to anyone noticing such symptoms to immediately contact veterinary authorities or isolate the affected animals to prevent further spread of the disease.

The Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Ondo State Council, has raised the alarm over the current state of the health sector in the state, lamenting that facilities across state government-owned hospitals are deteriorating.

While emphasizing that the situation requires immediate attention from the state government, the union urged Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to, as a matter of urgency, declare a state of emergency in the sector.

According to the NUJ, in a communiqué issued at the end of its monthly congress, which was presided over by the Chairman, Leke Adegbite, Aiyedatiwa should endeavor to pay an unscheduled visit to the state-owned medical facilities to assess the situation firsthand.

The union further stressed that the deteriorating conditions have subjected patients seeking healthcare to traumatic experiences, particularly due to the location of the mortuary opposite the Outpatient Department, OPD, which is also close to the emergency unit of UNIMEDTH.

With the union frowning upon the public sale of coffins on the premises of the University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital (UNIMEDTH), Akure Annex, it called for the relocation of the casket shop, operated by a private entity, away from the hospital to prevent psychological distress among patients.

“That the Congress noted with empathy the deteriorating health facilities across the state and the trauma patients endure in accessing quality and affordable healthcare services, calling on the state governor to declare a state of emergency in the health sector.
