The Plateau State Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, and Mineral Development has arrested over 100 illegal miners in Jos, the state capital, as part of efforts to curb environmental degradation and protect .
The Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Mr. Yabilsu Dogo, disclosed this during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday.
He noted that the crackdown was carried out in collaboration with the police to address the rising menace of illegal mining.
Dogo highlighted the severe environmental threats posed by the unregulated extraction of minerals in the state. He warned that illegal mining activities have led to significant land degradation, weakening soil structures and increasing the risk of land subsidence and sinkholes.
“You know that over time, this would lead to increased incidents of land subsidence and sinkholes, making the ground unstable for buildings, roads, and other infrastructure,” he said.
He linked the collapse of buildings in Jos last year to the activities of illegal miners, stressing that the indiscriminate digging undermines the integrity of structures, making them more vulnerable during heavy rains or seismic activity.
The Permanent Secretary further revealed that several illegal miners had lost their lives, often getting buried in the deep pits and tunnels they dug.
Apart from the environmental concerns, Dogo pointed out the economic implications of illegal mining, lamenting that the state loses significant revenue due to unregulated mineral extraction.
To address the issue, the Plateau State government has intensified enforcement measures to promote sustainable mining practices. Dogo said there are ongoing efforts to create awareness about the dangers of illegal mining and to provide alternative livelihoods for those engaged in the illicit activity.
“Our focus is not just enforcement but also educating the public on safe mining practices and creating viable alternatives for illegal miners,” he said.

President Tinubu overhauls leadership of federal varsities
President Bola Tinubu has announced leadership changes at several federal universities, including the University of Abuja, now known as Yakubu Gowon University.
The changes take effective immediately, Mr Bayo Onanuga, the President’s spokesman, said in a statement on Thursday.
“At Yakubu Gowon University, President Tinubu dissolved the entire governing council and relieved Prof Aisha Maikudi of her duties as Vice-Chancellor.
“Sen. Lanre Tejuoso, currently Pro-Chancellor of the University of Agriculture, Makurdi, has been appointed Pro-Chancellor of the Yakubu Gowon University.
“He will be succeeded in Makurdi by Sen. Joy Emordi, now pro-chancellor of Alvan Ikoku University of Education,” said the statement.
To succeed Maikudi, Tinubu appointed Prof. Lar Patricia Manko as Acting Vice Chancellor at the Yakubu Gowon University for a six-month term.
She will not be eligible to apply for the substantive Vice Chancellor position when it becomes available.
The President has also removed Prof. Polycarp Chigbu from his position as Acting Vice-Chancellor at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, UNN, before his tenure ends on Feb. 14.
Prof. Oguejiofu Ujam has been appointed as his successor for six months and will not be eligible to apply for the permanent position.
“The leadership changes at UNN extends to the role of Pro-Chancellor, with Gen. Ike Nwachukwu reassigned to Pro-Chancellor at the University of Uyo.
“President Tinubu appointed Engr Olubunmi Ojo as the new Pro-Chancellor of UNN. Previously, Ojo held the same position at the Federal University of Lokoja and the Federal University of Oye-Ekiti.
“Prof. Zubairu Abdullahi, currently the Pro-Chancellor of the University of Uyo, has been appointed to succeed Ojo at the Federal University of Lokoja,” said the statement.
Sen. Sani Stores is the new Pro-Chancellor of Alvan Ikoku University of Education, succeeding Sen. Joy Emordi, while Stores is now a Council Member at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
Additionally, Mr Olugbenga Kukoyi, a current Council Member at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, has been appointed the new Pro-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Awka, Anambra.
“All appointments and reassignment decisions are effective immediately.
“President Tinubu emphasised that these changes reflect his administration’s commitment to revitalising Nigeria’s higher education system through dynamic leadership and accountability.
“The restructuring aims to strengthen governance and academic excellence within Nigeria’s tertiary education sector,” concluded the statement.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Police Affairs, Dr Anuma Ogbonnaya Nila has reiterated his commitment to ensuring the full implementation of President Bola Tinubu’s 8-point agenda as it affects the Police ecosystem.
Anuma, who spoke at a meeting with the management and staff of the ministry on his assumption of duty in Abuja, expressed his willingness to facilitate and fastrack the needs of the rank and files in the Police to enable them provide effective and efficient service delivery to the citizens and maximum security in the country.
“We can change the narratives and bring smiles to the faces of the wives, children, and police officers across the country. When you joke about the welfare of the police, you have insecurity. We have to join hands to ensure we address the challenges they have.
“I am aware of the main mandate of this Ministry, which is to ensure internal security through the support of the Police ecosystem and to ensure effective security policy implementation by providing sufficient administrative support to the Nigeria Police and Police Academy as well as promoting community policing through engagement with the citizens and leadership in the community across the country,” Anuma stressed.
He, however, charged the directorate cadre, staff, and stakeholders to support him in discharging his duty in the ministry, adding that he runs an inclusive and open-door policy for effective and efficient service delivery to Nigerians.
The permanent secretary promised to run “an open-door policy, well inclusive administration where everybody would be carried along,” saying he’s “a true Nigerian, a detribalized person who works with all ages.”
Earlier, the Director overseeing the office of the Permanent Secretary, Mr Okehie Isaac Tochukwu, in his welcome remarks, said that the management and staff of the ministry were ready to cooperate and support Anuma to achieve the mandate of the ministry.

The United Kingdom will oppose any efforts to move Palestinians from the Gaza Strip to neighbouring Arab states against their will.
UK Minister of State for Development, Anneliese Dodds stated this on Thursday while reacting to US President Donald Trump’s recent remarks about his plan to take over the Gaza Strip.
“There must be no forced displacement of Palestinians nor any reduction in the territory of the Gaza Strip,” Dodds told the House of Commons.
“Palestinians must determine the future of Gaza with support from regional states and the wider international community.
“We would oppose any effort to move Palestinians in Gaza to neighbouring Arab states against their will. There must be no forced displacement of Palestinians, nor any reduction in the territory of the Gaza Strip.
“Palestinian civilians should be able to return to and rebuild their homes and their lives. That is a right guaranteed under international law.”
Trump had suggested the US could redevelop the war-torn territory into the “Riviera of the Middle East”.
