NUJ urges Cross River govt to reintroduce sanitary inspectors
The Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, has called on the Cross River State government to reintroduce sanitary inspectors to caution people against littering neighborhoods with waste.
This call was contained in a communiqué released on Friday at the end of its congress held at the state secretariat in Calabar.
They expressed happiness, however, at efforts by the state government to restore cleanliness but criticized the ongoing dumping of waste on major streets in Calabar.
They advised that such unrestrained dumping of waste defaces the aesthetics of the state capital, for instance.
“With the rainy season approaching, we recommend that the Calabar Urban Development Agency, CUDA, increase public awareness campaigns to dissuade people from unrestricted dumping of waste.
“We call on the authorities to reintroduce sanitary inspectors to address these issues.”
NUJ also expressed concerns over the rise in criminal activities in parts of the state capital, Calabar.
They, therefore, called for increased security surveillance in these locations.

The Lagos High Court sitting in Ikeja has ordered that all members of the Lagos House of Assembly be joined as parties in the suit filed by Hon. Mudashiru Obasa.

Hon. Obasa had approached the court to challenge his removal by at least 36 of his colleagues on January 13, 2025.
In the application dated February 12, 2025, and filed by his lawyer, Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Chief Afolabi Fashanu, the claimant stated that he was removed from his position on January 13, 2025, by 36 lawmakers while he was out of the country.
Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mr. Tayo Oyetibo, is leading Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Bimbo Akeredolu, and other lawyers to represent Hon. Mojisola Meranda.

A former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Comrade Timi Frank, has called on President Bola Tinubu to declare the candidate of the Social Democratic Party, SDP, Chief Moshood Abiola, as the winner of the June 12, 1993, presidential election.
Frank, in a statement issued on Friday, said the call has become necessary since former military president, General Ibrahim Babangida (rtd), who annulled the election, has owned up to the validity of the results.
DAILY POST reports that IBB, during the public presentation of his book titled A Journey in Service, blamed former military Head of State, General Sani Abacha, and other forces for instigating the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election, which he admitted MKO Abiola won.
Frank said: “I don’t think Tinubu should waste any more time in officially declaring Abiola President and according him all the entitlements and recognition due to him as a former president.
“He can do this by sending a bill to the National Assembly to recognize the June 12, 1993, presidential election, lawfully validate the results, and declare MKO as the winner of the election.
“Good enough, Tinubu was at the forefront of the June 12 struggle, which was principally aimed at getting General Sani Abacha’s junta to recognize Abiola as President and hand over power to him.”

The Kwara State Council of Ulama has urged Nigerians to avoid profiling any community over the crimes of a few, following the gruesome murder of a student, Hafsoh Lawal, allegedly killed for ritual purposes by one Abdulrahman Bello.
Speaking at a press conference in Ilorin, the state capital, the council, led by the Chief Imam of Ilorin, Sheikh Mohammad Bashir Salih, emphasized that Ilorin and Kwara State should not be labeled as havens for ritualists.
“Our state is known for its strong Islamic culture, which does not condone such acts. We call on Nigerians to avoid stereotyping communities for the crimes of a few individuals in their midst.
Ritual killings are offensive to all known religions, and we must all stand against them,” Sheikh Salih stated.
The council also condemned the murder of Hafsoh Lawal, calling for a thorough police investigation and demanding that all those involved face justice.
“We urge security agencies to ensure that anyone found guilty faces the full weight of the law. This will serve as a deterrent to others with similar criminal intentions,” the Chief Imam added.
To prevent similar occurrences, Sheikh Salih announced that the council would convene a meeting with Muslim leaders and clerics to discuss ways to combat ritual killings and strengthen moral teachings.
“We will intensify efforts in preaching the true tenets of Islam and guide young scholars on the best ways to carry out dawah (Islamic evangelism). Our religion forbids the killing of another soul, and this crime is a grave offense in the sight of our Creator,” he said, citing Qur’anic verses.
The council also extended its condolences to Hafsoh Lawal’s family, describing her murder as an unpardonable offense.
Meanwhile, the religious body commended Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq for maintaining peace and stability in the state, pledging continued collaboration to ensure progress.
“The law must take its course in this matter,” the council concluded.

President Donald Trump of the United States on Thursday said there were “pretty good talks” going on regarding Gaza.
Trump stated this at a joint press conference with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer when asked about the future of the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas militants but offered little detail.
Recall that a three-phase ceasefire in Gaza went into effect on January 19 and has led to the handover of 33 Israeli hostages held in Gaza and some 2,000 Palestinian prisoners and detainees held by Israel.
An initial six-week first phase of that ceasefire will expire in two days.
Israel said on Thursday it was sending negotiators to Cairo for talks, seeking to extend the first phase.
Trump was asked whether phase two would come to fruition.
“We’ll see what happens. Nobody really knows, but we’ll see what happens. We have some pretty good talks going on,” he said.
DAILY POST reports that Israel and Hamas have accused each other of violating the ceasefire.
The United Nations has described images of both emaciated Israeli hostages and Palestinian detainees released as distressing, saying they reflected the dire conditions in which they were held.
Starmer reiterated support for a two-state solution, which calls for creating a state for Palestinians in the Israeli-occupied West Bank and Gaza alongside Israel.
“Yes, I believe that the two-state solution is ultimately the only way for a lasting peace in the region,” Starmer said.

Former presidential aide, Chief Okoi Obono-Obla, has criticised the contingent of lawmakers from Cross River State in the National Assembly for proposing four separate bills to establish federal medical centers in Ogoja, Boki, Ugep and Abi LGAs of the state.
In a statement, he described their action as perplexing and a misguided approach to development.
Obono-Obla, a lawyer and APC stalwart, argued that with 23 federal medical centers already existing in the country, it was surprising that the legislators would propose establishing four more in Cross River State alone.
According to him, the lawmakers’ action reflects a lack of coordination and harmonization among them in Abuja, raising doubts about how the bills could progress to become law.
“It’s unclear how these bills would be passed into law, and even if they were, it’s unlikely that the President would assent to all four.
“Furthermore, it’s improbable that the executive branch would allocate funds for four federal medical centers in a single state.
“Our legislators should prioritize working together in a focused and harmonious manner to achieve meaningful results. Instead of trying to outdo one another or prove a point, they should strive for effective collaboration.
“This lack of cohesion not only portrays them as unserious but also hinders the development of our state,” he stated.
