Russia on Friday said it had suggested restoring direct air links with the United States at what it described as substantive and businesslike talks in Turkey.
Russia’s Foreign Ministry, however, did not say how the US side had responded at Thursday’s meeting in Istanbul, but shared in Russian airline Aeroflot that were up 3.8 percent after the news.
It was gathered that many Western countries halted air links with Russia in 2022 due to sanctions aimed at punishing it for the war in Ukraine.
Restoring flights to and from the US would be the most tangible economic result so far from a growing rapprochement between presidents Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump.
The six hours of talks between senior diplomats in Istanbul came after Trump-Putin phone call on February 12 and a high-level meeting in Saudi Arabia on February 18.
According to the two sides, they want to negotiate an end to the war in Ukraine and discuss the possibility of major business deals, but are focusing first on improving bilateral ties.
Recall that Putin on Thursday said that initial contacts with the Trump administration gave grounds for hope, and warned western elites not to sabotage them.
According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, in Istanbul, the sides discussed ways to overcome numerous irritants inherited from the previous US administration.

Posting on X, Musk described Vance as the best Vice President the US ever had.
“Best VP ever and our future President,” he wrote.
Meanwhile, Vance is the third-youngest US vice president in history and one of the least experienced, having previously served just one term as a senator.
Musk was Trump’s top donor during the 2024 presidential campaign and upon assumption of office, the US president established DOGE and made him the head of the department.
Trump gave Musk and his team the powers to reduce government spendings and ensure efficiency.
Vance was an uncompromising “Never Trumper” at the time of Trump’s first election, labeling the conservative tycoon “a moral disaster” and comparing him to Adolf Hitler.
But Vance reinvented himself when he entered politics, winning Trump’s endorsement in the 2022 Ohio Senate race.

Supreme Court declares Rivers LG election invaid, null, void
The Supreme Court on Friday declared as invalid, illegal, null and void, the local government election conducted in Rivers state on October 5, 2024, and won by the All Peoples Party, APP.
The apex court held that the election was invalid because all conditions precedent billed to be implemented were jettisoned by Rivers State Electoral Commission.
Specifically, Justice Jamilu Tukur who delivered the lead verdict held that the council poll was conducted in gross violation of section 150 of the Electoral Act 2022.
A Federal High Court in Abuja had on
September 30, 2024 stopped the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, from releasing voters register to the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission, RSIEC, for the purpose of conducting the October 5, 2024 local government elections in the state.
The court had also barred the Inspector General of Police IGP and the Department of the State Services, DSS, from providing security.
Justice Peter Lifu issued the order against INEC while delivering judgment in a suit brought before him by the All Progressives Congress, APC.
The suit was argued on behalf of the APC by a team of lawyers comprising Joseph Daudu, Sebastine Hon and Ogwu James Onoja, all SANs.
Justice Lifu held that the RSIEC was wrong in fixing the October 5, 2024 date for the conduct of the poll into the 23 local governments when all relevant laws guiding the election had not been complied with.
Among others, the judge held that the failure of the Rivers electoral body violated provisions of local government election conduct law for not publishing the mandatory 90 days notice before fixing the date.
Justice Peter Lifu also held that the update and revision of voter register ought to have been concluded before an election date can be legally and validity fixed in law.
The judge therefore ordered INEC not to make the certified voter register available to RSIEC until the law has been fully complied with.
Justice Peter Lifu also barred RSIEC from accepting any voter register from INEC or using it for the purpose of the October 5, 2024 local government poll.
