The Borno State Urban Planning and Development Board (BSUPDB) has banned street hawking and other illegal activities in Maiduguri metropolis.

This was contained in a statement issued by the General Manager of the board, Limán Mustapha, on Friday in Maiduguri, the state capital.

Mustapha said the ban was in accordance with the Borno State Urban Planning and Development Law of 2002.

According to him, the board prohibited street hawking, the operation of tricycles, and generator repair activities around the Post Office and Monday Market areas of Maiduguri.

He added that the board also banned any activities on pedestrian walkways, junctions, and roundabouts, as well as the sale of engine oil on road reserves, the dumping of sand or building materials, and the mixing of cement on roads. Additionally, the construction of boreholes by roadsides was prohibited.

The General Manager further stated that those affected by the order had been asked to vacate the occupied sites with immediate effect.

“The board has no alternative but to arrest and prosecute defaulters in a court of law.

“This measure aims to ensure a clean, safe, and organized urban environment in Maiduguri and other parts of the state,” he said.

Mustapha urged residents and business owners to comply with the ban to avoid legal action.

An investigation has been launched by the Kaduna State Police Command into the alleged assassination attempt on Senator Usman Lawal, who represents Kaduna Central Senatorial Zone, by unknown individuals.

A statement issued on Thursday issued by the Public Relations Officer, ASP Mansir Hassan, explained that it has yet to receive a formal complaint from the senator.

The PPRO further explained that a publication was made on the senator’s Facebook page claiming he had escaped an assassination attempt by unknown individuals within the state.

The statement explained that the attention of the command has been drawn to a publication on the Facebook handle of Sen. Lawal Adamu Usman (PDP) representing Kaduna Central Senatorial District, that he escaped an assassination attempt by some thugs in a yet-to-be-identified location in Kaduna North on 02/01/25. No time of the incident was given.

According to the statement, “Without mincing words, the command is yet to receive any formal complaint from the distinguished senator, aside from this astonishing publication on social media, and all efforts to contact him have proved abortive.”

The Commissioner of Police, CP Muhammad Rabiu, according to the statement has therefore ordered a full-scale investigation into the matter.

Officials of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, NiDCOM, in Jordan, which oversees Iraq, have intervened to return a 28-year-old trafficked Nigerian lady, Eniola Isaac.

This comes after a report on Wednesday revealed that the Nigerian lady was allegedly lured to Iraq under false promises of a better life.

It was gathered that after being subjected to various degrees of abuse, physical assaults and mistreatment from her employer in Iraq, she pleaded with the Nigerian authorities to help her return to Nigeria.

Releasing an update through its official X handle on Thursday, NiDCOM said Isaac’s situation underscored the rising alarm over the trafficking of Nigerians to Iraq through deceptive promises.

“Eniola Isaac, a 28-year-old trafficked Nigerian girl in Iraq, is expected to return to Nigeria on january 3rd with the intervention of the officials of the Nigerian mission in Jordan, that oversees Iraq.

“Another case of a Nigerian who went to work in Irag as a carer and was killed in suspicious circumstances is also being investigated.

“The Nigerian government has demanded an autopsy as to the cause of death of the victim,” it wrote.

NiDCOM warned of unscrupulous agents now wickedly luring young Nigerian women to Irag with fake and evil promises, most of which it said portend danger to the mostly unsuspecting victims who get lured into slavery and prostitution when they get to the country.
