Taraba: Troops foil kidnap attempt, arrest two suspects, recover arms

The Nigeria Army has said its troops of 6 Brigade, Sector 3 Operation Whirl Stroke, OPWS, have successfully thwarted a planned banditry attack within the southern part of Taraba State.

Captain Olubodunde Oni, Acting Assistant Director 6 Brigade Army Public Relations, in a statement said the thwarted attack followed a well-coordinated operation based on credible intelligence regarding an impending terrorist attack on some villages.

It said upon receiving actionable intelligence, troops on 11 December 2024 swiftly launched a series of aggressive patrols, ambushes, and covert operations to prevent the attack.

“These efforts culminated in the apprehension of two suspected terrorists, identified as Terry Waapara and Tobaya Tekura, in Adu village.

“The suspects were intercepted while attempting to infiltrate the Chachanji market to carry out their nefarious mission, believed to include kidnapping and other criminal activities.”

According to the statement, during the operation, troops recovered 2 AK-47 rifles, 2 AK-47 magazines, and 26 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition.

It said the suspects are currently in custody and undergoing further investigation to uncover more details about their network and activities.

The Commander of 6 Brigade, Brigadier General Kingsley Chidiebere Uwa, commended the troops for their vigilance, professionalism, and swift response, which led to this success.

He assures the good people of Taraba State that the Nigerian Army will remain resolute in its fight against terrorism, banditry, and other forms of criminality.

He appreciated the support and cooperation of law-abiding citizens in providing timely and credible information.

“Together, we will continue to work towards a safer and more secure nation,” it said.

The Benue State Government has pledged to partner with Civil Society Organizations, CSOs, to minimize Gender-Based Violence, GBV, in the state.

This was disclosed by Governor Hyacinth Alia while receiving the draft communiqué from CSO stakeholders in Makurdi.

Governor Alia, who was represented by his Chief of Staff, Mr Paul Biam, expressed his administration’s commitment to creating an enabling environment to support efforts aimed at minimizing human rights abuses.

He promised to liaise with partners and other critical stakeholders to ensure the implementation of policies targeted at reducing GBV cases in the state.

Governor Alia urged the people to be morally upright so that younger generations could emulate their positive behavior.

He also tasked Benue women to educate their female children on the importance of dressing decently to avoid unnecessary harassment from the opposite sex.

The CSO stakeholders in Benue State called on the state governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, to facilitate the signing of the amended Violence Against Persons Prohibition, VAPP, Bill into law to combat Gender-Based Violence, GBV.

The stakeholders, which included the Sexual Assault Referral Center, SARC, BENGONET, and the Community Link Empowerment Initiative, made the appeal at the end of the commemoration of 16 Days of Activism Against GBV.

The groups also held a road walk from Savannah Roundabout to the Government House, Makurdi, to present the communiqué to the governor, outlining their requests.

In the communiqué, SARC, led by Linda Ene Dirisu, also appealed to Governor Alia to equip its center adequately to handle GBV cases effectively.

The document further highlighted all activities and engagements carried out during the 16 Days of Activism.

Khalil Haqqani, Afghanistan’s Minister of Refugees and Repatriates Affairs and a senior Taliban leader, was killed in a suicide bombing at his ministry office in Kabul.

The attack, which took place as Haqqani was leaving his office, also claimed the lives of six others, according to sources in the Interior Ministry.

The Islamic State group (IS) has claimed responsibility for the bombing. An IS statement via its “Amaq” news agency reported that the attacker waited outside the minister’s office before detonating explosives as Haqqani exited.

Khalil Haqqani was a prominent figure in the Haqqani network, a powerful faction within the Taliban. He was designated a global terrorist by the United States, which had previously offered a $5 million reward for information leading to his arrest.

Haqqani’s death marks the most high-profile casualty among the Taliban leadership since the group regained control of Afghanistan in 2021 following the withdrawal of foreign troops.

The Haqqani network, founded by Khalil Haqqani’s brother, Jalaluddin, has been linked to numerous attacks during the Taliban’s insurgency.

Sirajuddin Haqqani, Jalaluddin’s son and Khalil’s nephew, currently serves as Afghanistan’s Interior Minister.

While the Taliban have brought relative stability since their return to power, Afghanistan continues to struggle with security threats.

The Islamic State Khorasan Province, ISKP, the regional affiliate of IS and a key rival of the Taliban, has orchestrated numerous bombings and suicide attacks across the country in recent years.

Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule has announced that the state government will commence payment of the new national minimum wage of N70,500 starting this month, December 2024, despite the ongoing industrial action within the state.

The announcement was made during the commissioning of the newly remodeled office of the Deputy Governor in Lafia, the state capital.

Governor Sule restated his administration’s commitment to addressing the issue of consequential adjustments stemming from the new wage structure.

He pointed out that previous administrations had approved higher percentages despite the state’s limited resources compared to its peers in the region.

The governor assured the public that his government was keen on implementing a fair and sustainable adjustment while prioritizing the welfare of workers.

Sule also appealed to labour unions to call off their strike and return to work, urging them to continue negotiations with the state government to achieve a mutually beneficial resolution.
