Troops foil bandits attacks in Taraba
Troops of 6 Brigade, Sector 3, Operation Whirl Stroke, OPWS, said they have successfully thwarted a planned banditry attack in the southern part of Taraba State.
A statement made available to journalists on Thursday by the Brigade’s Acting Assistant Director, Captain Oni Olubodunde, said the operation, which occured on December 11, 2024, also led to the arrest of two suspects.
“Acting on actionable intelligence about an impending terrorist attack on local villages, the troops launched a series of aggressive patrols, ambushes, and covert operations.
“These efforts culminated in the arrest of two suspects, identified as Terry Waapara and Tobaya Tekura, in Adu village,” the statement read.
The duo, according to the Army, was apprehended while attempting to infiltrate Chachanji market, allegedly to carry out kidnapping and other criminal activities.
“During the operation, security forces recovered two AK-47 rifles, two magazines, and 26 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition.
“The suspects are currently in custody and undergoing further investigation to uncover details about their network and activities.”
Elated by the development, the Brigade Commander, Brigadier General Kingsley Chidiebere Uwa, commended the troops for their vigilance and professionalism, which according to him, ensured the success of the operation.
Uwa reassured the people of the state that the Nigerian Army remains committed to combating terrorism, banditry and other forms of criminality.
He also lauded the cooperation of law-abiding citizens in providing timely and credible information, emphasizing that collective efforts are key to ensuring a safer and more secure nation.

Innovative community engagement, campaigns best strategies to fight TB – Advocates
Innovative community engagement and campaigns have been identified as one of the many strategies employed to fight Tuberculosis, TB, in Nigeria.
TB elimination advocates insist taking the fight to the grassroots is one major means of finding unreported cases as TB is not always hospital-based but a community issue.
The National Coordinator of African Coalitions on TB in Nigeria, Ibrahim Umoru, says the community engagement component is critical and must not be ignored.
Umoru made the remarks at the community sessions of the ongoing National TB conference in Abuja, where delegates from over 20 countries shared their country-specific experiences on TB elimination.
He noted that Nigeria has shown a lot of resilience, through its efforts and commitment, just like it did during the COVID-19 era, despite the lean resources.
Umoru, however, maintains that government commitment, media engagement and private sector participation are mostly needed at the grassroots to enhance case detection.
”TB is not a hospital issue, yes, you go to the hospital for medical treatment but the generality of TB cases comes from the communities
and that is why the community component is very important and we cannot keep quiet about it.
”Nigerians are innovative but the most important thing is your commitment, it takes you further, Nigeria has shown a lot to the world, our resilience and our efforts.
Dr Bolatito Aiyedigba, a Director for Tuberculosis at Breakthrough Action Nigeria, who highlighted some of the innovations used to increase case detection said the Check Am slogan, encouraged community people to test their lingering coughs.
”Some of the innovations were introduced during the COVID-19 era, COVID came with cough and cough is usually associated with tuberculosis as well. So it could be tuberculosis. Not every cough is due to COVID, so check it.
”Cough is due to different kinds of illnesses. And until you check, you will not know. And we also worked with the national TB hotline, when they call, they are directed on what to do, asked more questions and their fears are allayed, so they can get the appropriate testing. So that really, really helped. In addition to all the other innovations that came into the facility, testing was also improved.”
Aiyedigba also informed that the stigmatisation of people living with TB is still very high in Nigeria, noting that the country needs to tackle the menace.
”This is the next line of action that we’re going to tackle. Because now we’re fighting the TB cases, we’re putting them on treatment but we have to address the issue of stigma.
”And the stigma starts from self-stigmatisation, there’s no need to stigmatise yourself for having tuberculosis because tuberculosis is curable and treatable.

![](https://api.whatsapp.com/send?text=*Innovative%20community%20engagement,%20campaigns%20best%20strategies%20to%20fight%20TB%20–%20Advocates*nInnovative%20community%20engagement%20and%20campaigns%20have%20been%20identified%20as%20one%20of%20the%20many%20strategies%20employed%20to%20fight%20Tuberculosis,%20TB,%20in%20Nigeria.%20TB%20elimination%20advocates%20insist%20taking%20the%20fight%20to%20the%20grassroots%20is%20one%20major%20means%20of%20finding%20unreported%20cases%20as%20TB%20is%20not%20always%20hospital-based%20but%20a%20community%20issue.%20The%20National%20Coordinator%20of%20African%20Coalitions%20Innovative%20community%20engagement,%20campaigns%20best%20strategies%20to%20fight%20TB%20–%20Advocates%20<!--%20wp:html%20--><p><img%20width="1400"%20height="1400"%20src="https://dailypost.ng/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/MixCollage-12-Dec-2024-02-26-PM-211.jpg"%20class="webfeedsFeaturedVisual%20wp-post-image"%20alt=""%20loading="lazy"%20/></p><p>Innovative%20community%20engagement%20and%20campaigns%20have%20been%20identified%20as%20one%20of%20the%20many%20strategies%20employed%20to%20fight%20Tuberculosis,%20TB,%20in%20Nigeria.</p><p>TB%20elimination%20advocates%20insist%20taking%20the%20fight%20to%20the%20grassroots%20is%20one%20major%20means%20of%20finding%20unreported%20cases%20as%20TB%20is%20not%20always%20hospital-based%20but%20a%20community%20issue.</p><p>The%20National%20Coordinator%20of%20African%20Coalitions%20on%20TB%20in%20Nigeria,%20Ibrahim%20Umoru,%20says%20the%20community%20engagement%20component%20is%20critical%20and%20must%20not%20be%20ignored.</p><p>Umoru%20made%20the%20remarks%20at%20the%20community%20sessions%20of%20the%20ongoing%20National%20TB%20conference%20in%20Abuja,%20where%20delegates%20from%20over%2020%20countries%20shared%20their%20country-specific%20experiences%20on%20TB%20elimination.</p><p>He%20noted%20that%20Nigeria%20has%20shown%20a%20lot%20of%20resilience,%20through%20its%20efforts%20and%20commitment,%20just%20like%20it%20did%20during%20the%20COVID-19%20era,%20despite%20the%20lean%20resources.</p><p>Umoru,%20however,%20maintains%20that%20government%20commitment,%20media%20engagement%20and%20private%20sector%20participation%20are%20mostly%20needed%20at%20the%20grassroots%20to%20enhance%20case%20detection.</p><p>”TB%20is%20not%20a%20hospital%20issue,%20yes,%20you%20go%20to%20the%20hospital%20for%20medical%20treatment%20but%20the%20generality%20of%20TB%20cases%20comes%20from%20the%20communities<br%20/>and%20that%20is%20why%20the%20community%20component%20is%20very%20important%20and%20we%20cannot%20keep%20quiet%20about%20it.</p><p>”Nigerians%20are%20innovative%20but%20the%20most%20important%20thing%20is%20your%20commitment,%20it%20takes%20you%20further,%20Nigeria%20has%20shown%20a%20lot%20to%20the%20world,%20our%20resilience%20and%20our%20efforts.</p><p>Dr%20Bolatito%20Aiyedigba,%20a%20Director%20for%20Tuberculosis%20at%20Breakthrough%20Action%20Nigeria,%20who%20highlighted%20some%20of%20the%20innovations%20used%20to%20increase%20case%20detection%20said%20the%20Check%20Am%20slogan,%20encouraged%20community%20people%20to%20test%20their%20lingering%20coughs.</p><p>”Some%20of%20the%20innovations%20were%20introduced%20during%20the%20COVID-19%20era,%20COVID%20came%20with%20cough%20and%20cough%20is%20usually%20associated%20with%20tuberculosis%20as%20well.%20So%20it%20could%20be%20tuberculosis.%20Not%20every%20cough%20is%20due%20to%20COVID,%20so%20check%20it.</p><p>”Cough%20is%20due%20to%20different%20kinds%20of%20illnesses.%20And%20until%20you%20check,%20you%20will%20not%20know.%20And%20we%20also%20worked%20with%20the%20national%20TB%20hotline,%20when%20they%20call,%20they%20are%20directed%20on%20what%20to%20do,%20asked%20more%20questions%20and%20their%20fears%20are%20allayed,%20so%20they%20can%20get%20the%20appropriate%20testing.%20So%20that%20really,%20really%20helped.%20In%20addition%20to%20all%20the%20other%20innovations%20that%20came%20into%20the%20facility,%20testing%20was%20also%20improved.”</p><p>Aiyedigba%20also%20informed%20that%20the%20stigmatisation%20of%20people%20living%20with%20TB%20is%20still%20very%20high%20in%20Nigeria,%20noting%20that%20the%20country%20needs%20to%20tackle%20the%20menace.</p><p>”This%20is%20the%20next%20line%20of%20action%20that%20we’re%20going%20to%20tackle.%20Because%20now%20we’re%20fighting%20the%20TB%20cases,%20we’re%20putting%20them%20on%20treatment%20but%20we%20have%20to%20address%20the%20issue%20of%20stigma.</p><p>”And%20the%20stigma%20starts%20from%20self-stigmatisation,%20there’s%20no%20need%20to%20stigmatise%20yourself%20for%20having%20tuberculosis%20because%20tuberculosis%20is%20curable%20and%20treatable.</p><p><a%20href="https://dailypost.ng/2024/12/12/innovative-community-engagement-campaigns-best-strategies-to-fight-tb-advocates/">Innovative%20community%20engagement,%20campaigns%20best%20strategies%20to%20fight%20TB%20–%20Advocates</a></p><p><img%20src="https://dailypost.ng/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/MixCollage-12-Dec-2024-02-26-PM-
