The family of the late Owa Obokun of Ijesaland, Oba Gabriel Adekunle Aromolaran II, has accused members of the Owa-in-Council of demanding exorbitant levies for burial rites.

The family described the actions as against the late monarch’s values of integrity and harmony.

In a statement released on Thursday by Adebayo Adedeji on behalf of the Aromolaran family, the chiefs were accused of imposing frivolous charges and issuing threats to halt traditional rites if the payments were not made.

The allegations were contained in the statement titled, “Response to Various Publications Concerning the Just Concluded Celebration of Life Events for His Imperial Majesty, Late Oba (Dr) Gabriel Adekunle Aromolaran II, CFR, LLD, the Owa Obokun Adimula of Ijesaland (Owa Aromolaran II).”

The family alleged that those demands added undue pressure during an already challenging period.

“The chiefs explicitly threatened that the rites would not be performed unless these payments were made. This coercive approach placed an enormous burden on the family,” the statement read.

The family further claimed that after making the payments under duress, disputes among the chiefs created factions that complicated the burial process.

They alleged some chiefs even sought to sabotage the events held in honour of Oba Aromolaran’s legacy, despite being informed of the plans in advance.

“These actions contradicted the communal values the late Oba championed.

WDespite these challenges, the Bepo-Aromolaran dynasty remains united and refuses to be divided by unfounded allegations or manipulations,” the statement added.

In response, the spokesperson for the Owa-in-Council, Chief Bola Orolugbagbe, dismissed the allegations, urging the family to identify specific individuals involved.

“Tell them to name the chiefs that are extorting them. That’s all. We are free, so they should just provide the names of those chiefs.

“The Owa-in-Council is not an individual. Let them name the chiefs and publish the names—that is all I have to say,” Orolugbagbe said.

A total of 109 officers of the Edo State Command of the Nigeria Correctional Service, NCS, have been promoted to new ranks by the Service.

DAILY POST reports that the promoted officers were decorated with the new ranks in Benin City on Thursday by the State Controller of Corrections, Philomena Emehinola.

Emehinola, who was also promoted to the new rank of Assistant Controller General, charged the promoted officers for more dedication to duties.

She said the promotions were a call to duty and charged the promoted officers to be more hardworking and disciplined.

She stated that President Bola Tinubu had been more benevolent to the service, particularly with the historic promotions of more than 12,000 personnel in 2024.

“Since the coming of the president, Sen. Bola Tinubu, he has shown more support to the correctional service.

“Our promotion is not delayed and we are sure that the 2025 promotion will even be more earlier than this.

“Let’s continue to move the service forward. Nobody else can do it for us.

“All of us have to brace up, be more disciplined and hardworking to take the service to an enviable height,” she said.

The newly promoted Assistant Controller General of Corrections who pacified those not captured in the new promotions, assured them that their promotions would come at God’s allotted time, but urged them to brace up.

Emehinola, said eight of the officers were promoted to the rank of Deputy Controller (DC) and another eight to Assistant Controllers (AC).

She posited that 12 were promoted to Chief Superintendent, 10 superintendent, 32 Deputy Superintendent, 22 Assistant Superintendent I and 13 Assistant Superintendent III, respectively.

Responding on behalf of others, DC Smart Omonua commended the authorities of the service for the elevation, assuring that the officers would reciprocate the gesture.

“As we gather here today, we are reminded that Nigeria is a multicultural and more ethnic country with over 250 ethnic groups, with 500 languages spoken and understanding where we are and what we have, and all that the Lord of the universe has given to Nigeria.
