The Emir of Ngelzarma in Fune Local Government Area, Yobe State, Alhaji Muhammad Zanna Mai Yeri, has called on government and other relevant stakeholders in the state to address the issue of young girls hawking to protect their dignity and prevent gender-based violence.

He made the call while speaking at a roundtable organised by the Sultan Foundation for Peace and Development on the role of faith and traditional leaders in combating gender-based violence in Yobe.

The emir highlighted the dangers young girls face when forced into hawking, especially school-aged girls who are often seen at motor parks, markets, and filling stations rather than in school.

“Many girls are exposed to serious risks, including sexual assault, as a result of hawking,” the emir said.

He noted that the problem continues to persist despite efforts to end it.

Alhaji Muhammad Zanna Mai Yeri said his emirate, alongside local stakeholders, has launched awareness campaigns to address gender-based violence, reduce hawking, and promote girls’ education.

He urged the government to review hawking policies and strengthen measures to protect young girls from exploitation, emphasising the need to prosecute offenders who jeopardise the future of vulnerable girls.

The chairman of the Benue State chapter of the Trade Union Congress, Gideon Akaa, has said the union is still dialoguing with the government over the new minimum wage.

Akaa disclosed this on Friday following a spate of rumours that the state government has agreed to pay N40,000 as the new national minimum wage to civil servants instead of the N71,000 signed into law by the president.

He said: “I am not aware of the rumour of N40,000. We held a meeting with the government and the negotiation is still ongoing.

“Nobody has mentioned anything about N40,000 to the best of my knowledge. So, where the rumour is coming from, I do not know. Government has not agreed to pay any amount. We are still negotiating. Once the negotiation is concluded, we will sign an agreement.

“As the negotiation is still ongoing, we have so many figures but we are yet to agree on something. We have N75,000 and N77,000 on the negotiation table.”

Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, has announced that an executive bill for “responsible mining” will be forwarded to the State House of Assembly to eliminate irregularities in and standardise mining practices.

Bago made this known during a visit by the Senate Committee on Solid Minerals, led by its chairman, Senator Ekong Sampson, in Minna.

According to him, the bill, when passed into law, will spell out the procedures to follow in terms of mining, thereby getting rid of all forms of irregularities in the mining sector.

The governor disclosed that already the state government has held a series of meetings with stakeholders in the mining industry on the proposed bill.

He further explained that the bill also seeks to address post-mining effects, among others in the state.

Lamenting the spade of the activities of artisanal miners in the state, he disclosed: “It has resulted in the loss of many lives and property just as their activities have encouraged banditry activities.”

He thanked the Senate committee for the visit and reiterated the state’s continued support and partnership with the committee to achieve its set objectives, especially with ongoing talks with the Federal Government on a licence for aggregation to assist in checking the exploitation of young illegal miners.

The Kogi State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has challenged Governor Usman Ododo to make full disclosure of the state’s total workforce and wage bill.

The state chapter of the party argued that such transparency is essential for citizens to better understand the state’s financial management and administrative practices.

In a statement issued by the state publicity secretary, Alhaji Tijani Aruwa, PDP criticised the current administration for a lack of transparency, likening the state’s governance to that of a “secret agency.”

The party expressed concern that citizens remain largely uninformed about the financial activities and decisions that affect their lives.

Aruwa said: “The people of Kogi State deserve to know the truth about their government’s financial dealings. Governor Ododo must provide accurate figures regarding the state workforce and the total wage bill. This information is crucial for accountability and to ensure that public funds are utilised effectively.”

PDP further lamented Governor Ododo’s extravagant spending, noting he has reportedly spent over two billion naira on renovating his own office.

The party drew parallels between Ododo and his predecessor, Yahaya Bello, suggesting that the current administration’s approach to governance is not significantly different.

“We urge citizens not to be misled by claims of salary payments, highlighting that Kogi State reportedly has one of the lowest numbers of civil servants at both the local and state levels. The administration appears to be run by a select group prioritising their interests over the welfare of citizens.

“It is imperative that the government provide comprehensive public disclosure of its financial activities and the true state of the workforce. Only then can we begin to restore trust and accountability in our governance,” he added.
