The Israeli military on Sunday said it captured a senior Hezbollah operative during a raid in northern Lebanon.

The raid comes a month after Hezbollah said it had targeted a naval base on Israel’s northern Mediterranean coast that houses an elite Israeli naval commando.

CNN reports that members of the elite Shayetet 13 force seized the alleged Hezbollah operative after landing on the northern Lebanon.

Israeli official told CNN that the seized operative was now being investigated by an intelligence unit of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).

Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency (NNA) reported Saturday that eyewitnesses had seen an unidentified military force carrying out a landing operation on the Batroun beach at dawn the day before.

Former Commissioner for Information in Abia State, John Okiyi Kalu has said that the just concluded Abia State local government election did not have any credibility.

Okiyi, who was also Commissioner for Trade and Investment during the immediate past administration of former Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, said that results announced by Abia State Independent Electoral Commission (ABSIEC) were nothing but a charade.

He alleged that in many polling units, there were complaints of missing results sheets but results were still later announced in such areas.

He further alleged that the total results announced by ABSIEC in Ohafia, his own local government, were about 53,000 even when a big party like the All Progressive Congress (APC) did not participate in the local government election.

Okiyi said that the same Ohafia local government was announced to have recorded about 20,000 votes during the 2023 guber election that produced Governor Alex Otti.

He regretted that in his own polling unit the total results cast were not up to 140 but different results were announced.

“The local government election was a charade. The local elections conducted by the PDP administration is more credible,” he said.

According to him, the Chairman of ABSIEC, Professor George Chima did not meet up the expectations of Abia people.

However, the ABSIEC Chairman, while announcing the results on Saturday, scored his Commission high.

He said the officials did their best in conducting free and fair polls and gave Abia people government at the grassroots level.

Hardship: Tinubu should be humble to borrow my ideas – Atiku

Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar on Sunday said President Bola Tinubu’s government should be humble enough to borrow from his ideas in the interest of the Nigerian people.

The statement comes after Atiku disclosed that Nigerians were inundating him with inquiries on solutions to Nigeria’s current challenges.

In a post on his X handle, the ex-VP described such inquiries as distraction from the critical questions of what Tinubu needs to do to save Nigerians from the excruciating pains arising from his trial-and-error economic policies.

However, Atiku went on to suggest some ideas that he believed would have the potential to transform the country.

DAILY POST also reported the former Vice President described Tinubu’s floating of the exchange rate system as an overkill, urging the President to be humble enough to borrow from his ideas.

“I’ve been inundated with inquiries of what I would have done differently if I were at the helm of affairs of our country. I am not the president, Tinubu is.

“The focus should be on him and not on me or any other. I believe that such inquiries distract from the critical questions of what President Bola Tinubu needs to do to save Nigerians from the excruciating pains arising from his trial-and-error economic policies.

“However, I understand and appreciate the challenges faced by citizens in seeking alternatives to what is not working for them.

“I hope Tinubu and members of his administration are humble enough to borrow one or two things from our ideas in the interest of the Nigerian people.

“I would now go ahead and articulate some of our ideas that would have had the potential to transform our beloved country,” Atiku said.

Obaseki must account for N1.5trn revenues, allocations in 8years – Edo leaders

A group of political leaders and other stakeholders from Edo State has insisted that the out-going Governor, Mr Godwin Obaseki must account for the over N1.5 trillion the State got in the last eight years through Federal allocations, generated revenues, loans, grants and other financial incentives.

The leaders also urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, to go after state officials who held sway in the last eight years.

This is coming a few days to the inauguration of Senator Monday Okpebholo-led administration in the state.

The leaders, speaking through a pro-democracy group, Initiative for Democratic Advancement and Free Speech, said despite the public outcry by Edo people, some officials of the Obaseki administration were still allegedly fiddling with the State’s resources and assets.

The Executive Director of the organisation, Patrick Osaigbovo and others threatened that they may be forced to lead a protest to the Abuja office of the EFCC if it doesn’t act.

DAILY POST recalls that on Friday, officials of the EFCC arrested a close ally of Obaseki, the State Accountant-General, Julius Anelu.

The anti-graft agency also grabbed two other officials in connection with N26.6 billion derivation funds allocated to the State.

The withdrawal of N13.6 billion of the money, leaving only N13 billion in the account within one week drew the interest of the EFCC.

The statement partly read, “We have watched with dismay, the inhuman looting that has been going on in Edo for years. We are surprised that the EFCC, for almost eight years, did not lift its fingers to arrest any official of Obaseki’s administration.

“Even with just a few days to go, the looting has not stopped. We are wondering if the EFCC wants the State to go bankrupt before it steps in?

“We have enough evidence to assist the EFCC in doing its job. This is to show you how much we care about our State, Edo.

“Obaseki got over N1.5 trillion as revenues and allocations in eight years. Edo State does not look like it got such funds. So, Obaseki must account for those funds now or later.”
