Osimhen slams Finidi over criticism for poor results in World Cup qualifiers

Napoli striker, Victor Osimhen, has hit back at Super Eagles coach, Finidi George, for singling him out for criticism.

Finidi had drawn the first blood following his criticism of the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF), adding that Osimhen and some senior Super Eagles players lack commitment and are above the law.

Osimhen who missed the last two 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin Republic due to injury took to Instagram live on Saturday to clear his name while he also hit back at Finidi.

“The Super Eagles is not my father’s own, if this will cause me to stop playing for the Super Eagles, no problem,” Osimhen said.

“I called Finidi George when he was appointed and told him, let’s do great things together.

“I had an injury in the last minute of Napoli’s last Serie A match of the season, it was an ankle injury that was confirmed on MRI.

“I knew things like this would happen, I called Finidi immediately after meeting with the doctor and we both talked with Finidi but now, I have lost every respect for him.

“I won’t allow any disrespect from anybody, I won’t allow that stain from anybody. I always play my heart out for Nigeria.

“I call my teammates before match to encourage them but after two bad games, everyone is blaming me that wasn’t even part of the team.”

Finidi had lamented that he has not received much support from the NFF and that some of the senior Super Eagles players lacked commitment while they are also above discipline.

He also used Osimhen to drive home his point, adding that the Napoli striker and a few other players always choose the matches they want to play.

Finidi on Saturday resigned from his position as Super Eagles’ manager, bowing to pressure after the team’s shock 2-1 loss to Benin Republic in the 2026 World Cup qualifier last Monday.
