Hot SourceThe Millennium Development Authority (MiDA) has announced plans to leverage its successes under the $547 million Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Compact to drive Ghana’s new agricultural policy agenda, Grow24.
MiDA’s Chief Executive, Mr Alexander Kofi-Mensah Mould, revealed this in an exclusive interview, outlining the Authority’s strategic role in transforming the country’s agricultural sector.
Grow24, which was recently launched by President John Dramani Mahama as part of the broader “24hr+” development vision, seeks to revitalise Ghana’s agriculture through large-scale, intensive farming. At the centre of this agenda is the Volta Economic Corridor project, which aims to irrigate over two million hectares of land to support commercial farming and agro-industrial activities.
Originally established to implement the US-funded MCC Compact, MiDA will now take on an expanded mandate as a national delivery agency for agricultural transformation initiatives.
Mr Mould emphasised that MiDA’s extensive experience in infrastructure, energy, and agro-industrial development positions it well to support the ambitious Grow24 agenda.
“Through the MCC Compact, we developed proven, high-impact models ready for nationwide application,” he said. “We are now building on that strong foundation to support food security, economic diversification, and rural industrialisation under Grow24.”
A key highlight of the MCC Compact was its $189 million Agriculture Project, which included the Land Tenure Facilitation (LTF) Activity. The programme improved land tenure security, boosted investor confidence in agriculture, and increased productivity.
According to Mr Mould, MiDA plans to adapt and scale several core components from the Compact—such as land preparation, irrigation engineering, and integrated agronomic systems—to achieve Grow24’s ambitious targets.
He disclosed that MiDA is already undertaking precision land clearing and levelling activities, along with the design of advanced irrigation systems tailored to different ecological zones. These efforts combine agricultural science, engineering, and economic principles to create sustainable, large-scale farming enterprises.
The Volta Economic Corridor, described as the flagship of Grow24, is expected to become a major food production and export hub while creating thousands of jobs for rural communities.
MiDA’s role, Mr Mould noted, will be to provide the technical and managerial expertise necessary to ensure the long-term success of the project.
“Grow24 represents a bold new vision for agricultural development in Ghana, and MiDA is fully prepared to deliver on that promise,” he said.
As Ghana charts a new course for agricultural growth and rural development, MiDA’s renewed focus under Grow24 is set to transform the farming and agribusiness landscape across the country.
