Government has introduced a new digital platform aimed at accelerating Ghana’s shift toward renewable energy by simplifying the process for households and businesses to join the national net-metering scheme.
Net metering enables solar users to export surplus electricity to the national grid in return for credits, easing electricity costs and encouraging wider solar adoption.
At the launch in Accra, the Deputy Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Richard Gyan-Mensah, explained that the platform is expected to modernise and speed up the registration process for prospective solar users.
“This user-friendly platform will enable homes, businesses, and industry players to apply for smart meters for both captive and renewable energy systems. It will also allow us to track all solar installations nationwide,” he said.
The Deputy Minister emphasised that the initiative fits into the country’s broader clean-energy agenda, supported by international partners including the African Development Bank, the Climate Investment Funds, the Government of Ghana and the Swiss Government.
Swiss Ambassador Simone Giger welcomed the rollout, stating that the system is expected to enhance efficiency in the renewable-energy space by improving document submission, monitoring and reporting, as well as data management across institutions.
Acting Executive Secretary of the Energy Commission, Eunice Biritwum, said the digital tool will remove long-standing administrative bottlenecks and improve coordination between agencies involved in renewable-energy regulation.
African Development Bank Group Country Manager, Eyerusalem Fasika, highlighted the Bank’s ongoing support for Ghana’s green-energy transition, referencing its US$27 million contribution to the mini-grid PV and net-metering project under the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition.
The portal is expected to increase national solar uptake and provide a more convenient pathway for consumers to adopt clean and affordable energy solutions.
