FG Inaugurates Inter-ministerial Committee on Ban of Single-use Plastics

In a significant move towards environmental sustainability and waste management reforms in the country, the federal government has inaugurated the Inter-Ministerial Committee on the Ban of Single-Use Plastics (SUPs).

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Sen. George Akume, described the ban of single-use plastics as an initiative that aligns with Nigeria’s commitment to global environmental standards and the resolve to reduce plastic pollution that poses serious threats to public health, ecosystems and marine life.

Akume was represented by the Permanent Secretary Overseeing General Services Office (GSO, Mohammed Sanusi Danjuma.

 “The federal government arrived at this decision following a Federal Executive Council Memorandum EC (2024), presented by the Minister of Environment, which was held on Tuesday, 25 June 2024.

 “The FEC decision was in line with the federal government’s efforts to tackle various health and environmental challenges, especially those caused by single-use plastics products and therefore, approved the ban in the country of polyethene terephthalate (PET) bottles, styrofoam, plastic bags, sachet water and straw, which has become an environmental sanitation challenge.

 “The inappropriate disposal of plastic materials is a major cause of marine pollution as well as land degradation. Plastic wastes take a longer time to decompose both on land and water, therefore, pose a serious threat to wildlife and public health due to the toxic chemicals,” he said.

The Committee, made up of key representatives from various MDAs, and Stakeholder organisations, is mandated to coordinate and oversee the implementation of policies and strategies aimed at phasing out single-use plastics nationwide.

The committee terms of Reference were to investigate the issue of single use plastics, evaluate the benefits and broader implications of the ban and to design the ways and means in the promotion of the best environmental practices within the plastic value chain, amongst others.

The federal government described the ban on single-use of plastics as an initiative that underscores Nigeria’s leadership in environmental stewardship and commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

    Proposed Aba State has the potential of becoming the most economically viable among all state creation proposals currently under consideration, a group of indigenes from the area have said.

    The agitators, in a statement yesterday  by the Chairman and Secretary, Aba State Movement, HRH Eze Love Wogu and Chief G. I. Akara, respectively, said the creation of Aba State is deep rooted, and  not a recent or politically motivated demand, but a century-long pursuit rooted in a distinct identity. 

     They pointed out that if not for the 1983 coup, Aba state would have come to reality by now. 

     They noted that other states proposed at the same time had been created. 

    They said: “This isn’t simply a demand; it’s a promise that has been repeatedly made and validated but never kept.”

    They added: “The movement’s unwavering dedication is evidenced by its submissions to every state creation committee and national conference since 1988, demonstrating a resilience that has outlasted numerous governments and generations.

     “Throughout Nigeria’s complex history of state creation, the quest for Aba State stands out as a persistent and enduring endeavor.

    “The journey began in 1915 when the British colonial government administratively united the Asa, Ndoki, and Ngwa people into the Aba Division. 

     “The formal political pursuit of autonomy began just over a decade later, in 1927. This long struggle reached a critical milestone in 1983 when the National Assembly, under a democratic government, approved a referendum for the creation of Aba State. 

     “However, that referendum was never realised due to the military coup of December 31, 1983. Ironically, every other state recommended for creation alongside Aba in 1983—Adamawa, Jigawa, Katsina, Kogi, Taraba, and Enugu—has since been established, leaving Aba as the only unfulfilled recommendation.”

     They also said: “Beyond historical claims, a compelling economic case exists for Aba State. Advocates argue that the proposed state would not only be sustainable from its inception but would also quickly become a significant financial powerhouse.

     “The region is already the commercial and industrial heart of the South-east. Aba metropolis, home to the renowned Ariaria International Market, is a major hub for leather goods, footwear, and engineering fabrications, serving markets across West and Central Africa.

    “This economic strength is further bolstered by vast resources, including approximately 124 operational oil wells and some of Nigeria’s highest-quality gas reserves in Ukwa West.

     “Furthermore, the proposed state has the unique advantage of self-sufficient electricity generation, thanks to the Geometric Power Plant in Osisioma Ngwa, which promises to trigger a significant industrial revolution.”

    “A 1998 Federal Government survey revealed that the nine Local Government Areas comprising the proposed Aba State contributed the largest portion of Abia State’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR).”

    DSS Files Six-Count Charge Against Man for Allegedly Calling for Coup

    The Department of State Services (DSS) has filed a six-count charge against a 27-year-old man, Innocent Chukwuemeka Onukwume, for allegedly calling for a military coup in Nigeria.

    According to the charge sheet, filed before the Federal High Court in Abuja and marked FHC/ABJ/CR/610/2025, Onukwume, of Umusayo Layout in Oyigbo Local Government Area of Rivers State, is accused of committing the offence in October 2025.

    The DSS, through its counsel AM Danalami, filed the case on November 11, alleging that Onukwume’s actions amounted to conduct capable of undermining the nation’s democratic governance.

    The agency stated that the accused person’s conduct contravenes Sections 46A(1) and 59(1) of the Criminal Code Act, which prescribe penalties for acts considered treasonable or capable of causing public disorder.

    Four of the counts in the charge read:

    *That you, Innocent Chukwuemeka Onukwume, male, 27 years old of Umusayo Layout, Oyigbo LGA of Rivers State, sometimes in October, 2025 having the intent to cause fear and alarm to the public or to disturbing the public peace, posted a message calling for a coup in Nigeria on your social media account to wit: your verified X account (@theagroman), by which you published the following words: “A coup in Nigeria is needed. Dispose of APC, suspend the Nigeria government and join the AES. That is all we need now.’ You thereby committed an offence punishable under section 59 (1) of the Criminal Code Act, Cap 77, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

    *That you, Innocent Chukwuemeka Onukwume, male, 27 years old of Umusayo Layout, Oyigbo LGA of Rivers State, on or about 15th day of October, 2025 and within the jurisdiction of this honorable court, with intent to cause annoyance, inconvenience, danger, obstruction, insult, enmity, criminal intimidation, hatred, ill will or needless anxiety, against the government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, knowingly and intentionally posted a message on the social media via your verified account, to wit: your verified X account (@theagroman), by which you published the following words: ‘It will happen eventually, Nigeria. The military needs your support now! Only them can save this country. The bastard in Aso Rock has basically sold this country to the West and they run our intelligence apparatus only the military can reset this country.’ You thereby committed an offence Contrary to Section 24 (1) (b) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2024 (As Amended).
