MSF Intensifies Fight Against Child Malnutrition in Bauchi, Provides Free Medical Services to 2,000 Children

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), also known as “Doctors Without Borders”, has continued to make significant impact in Bauchi State, providing free medical services to 2,000 children between ages 1 month to 15 years every month.

The humanitarian organisation supports the Bauchi State government to respond to malnutrition cases and vaccine preventable diseases.

The Project Medical Preferent MSF Bauchi, Dr. Claude Bitaronga, shared the organisation’s activities during a media visit to the MSF Pediatric hospital in Kafin Madaki Ganjuwa Local Government Area of Bauchi State organised by Journalists for Public Health and Development Initiative (J4PD), yesterday.

Dr. Bitaronga said the organisation provides a wide range of services to hundreds of children who come in with severe acute malnutrition and other complications.

According to him, “Patients who pass by this hospital are being referred from Primary Health Care Centres within the state and neighbouring Jigawa and Plateau states and others come based on information they receive about services that MSF provides.”

He said the patients coming into the the area on a daily basis are between 70- 80 on a regular period and 100 during peak period which starts from April to July.

“In the two years now that is 2024/2025 we have recorded increase in patients flow during the months of April to July which is why we had to expand our bed capacity from 250 to 350 to accommodate all who need stabilisation.”

The MSF Isolation Centre offers comprehensive care, including three free meals daily for both children and their caregivers. Essential supplies such as sanitary items, drugs, and laboratory investigations are provided at no cost.

“MSF also provides Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF) tailored to each child’s age and weight to help in their recovery. Children who have been stabilised are referred to one of the organisation’s ATF centres where they continue with their treatment.”

Bitaronga added that MSF has introduced Para-Muac, a strategy where community health workers train parents and caregivers on how to screen their children for malnutrition.

“Today these parents can use the Mid-Upper Arm Circumference tape (Muac) very well that when they come to the hospital the readings are accurate in most cases.”

The hospital also has a health promotion and community engagement unit that links the community to the hospital and create awareness about services being provided and what is expected from community members.

Musa Damsari, father of a child on admission from Kirfi Local Government Area, said his 18-month-old son had swelling and diarrhea and that they had visited other hospitals before coming to Kafin Madaki.

“I see improvement in my son’s condition and I am happy, we had previously given him traditional herbs, but the care here made all the difference.”

To Aisha Mohammed from Ningi Local Government Area, she noted that after just nine days of treatment, the swelling on her two years old son has reduced by 90 per cent.

“The free meals, protein-rich foods, and RUTF helped a lot.”

MSF’s commitment extends beyond healthcare provision. While the original Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between MSF and the Ministry of Health outlined a 50-50 personnel contribution, MSF currently provides 80 per cent of the doctors, with the state supplying only 20 per cent. The Ministry of Health has contributed the majority of nursing staff, while MSF handles the remaining 20 per cent.

The humanitarian organisation also provides mental health services to mothers.

“When a child is malnourished it affects the family and most especially the mother so we provide her with psycho social support.”

As MSF continues its efforts in Bauchi, the organisation is not only providing immediate medical care but also building long-term capacity in the local community to improve health outcomes for future generations.

Okpella Community Protests Edo Govt Planned Installation of Sado as Okuokpellagbe of Okpella

Members of the Ukhomuyio Community, Okpella, Etsako East Local Government Area of Edo State, yesterday, protested the planned installation of one Michael Sado as the Okuokpellagbe of Okpella.

The protesters said the selection of Sado was in violation of Declaration of the Customary Law regulating succession to the traditional title of Okuokpellagbe, adding that Sado was picked by a group who has no legal recognition in the Declaration.

Speaking on behalf of the protesters, the Obodeanokpella of Okpella, Chief Charles Adogah, said the Declaration vested the power of nominating the Okuokpellagbe of Okpella on the component branch of the appropriate ruling house superintendent by the village head.

Adogah, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, stated that it was sad that Governor Monday Okpebholo endorsed a different script that was not approved by constitutionally recognised kingmakers.

He said many of the community elders have been harrassed, arrested and detained for speaking against the selection of Okuokpellagbe.

He appealed to Governor Okpebholo to suspend what he termed “unlawful coronation of Sado” as well as cancellation of the flawed process that led to his appointment.

He said Komunio Village of the Oteku ruling house be allowed, without interference, to carry out its traditional and lawful responsibility of selecting a candidate to the exalted throne of Okuokpellagbe of Okpella.

According to him, “The selection process proceeds strictly in line with the Declaration of Customary Law regulating the selection.

“All arrests and harassment of peaceful innocent community members should cease immediately and those arrested be released unconditionally without delay.

“Your Excellency, your kinsman, Professor Ambrose Folorunsho Alli, is remembered with reverence and pride in Okpella. We pray that your name, too, will be etched not in controversy, but in honour. Let your legacy be one of justice, not of injustice dressed in political convenience.

“To all Okpella sons and daughters, we say remain calm, but resolute. Remain peaceful, but firm. Our culture, our voice, and our heritage must not be silenced.”

Edo Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Lucky Eseigbe, said the protest against the installation was ‘too late.’

Eseigbe stated that the governor approved Sado’s selection being the nominee from the community.

He urged the aggrieved Ukhomuyio Community members to seek legal action.

The 2024/2025 matriculation ceremony of Modibbo Adama University (MAU) Yola, Adamawa State, marked a significant milestone in the lives of the newly admitted students for the 2025 academic session.

The Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Ibrahim Umar, in his addresses emphasised the importance of commitment, excellence, and character development.

He said that the university admitted 5,297 undergraduate students across various faculties, including Medical Sciences, Agriculture, Education, Engineering, and Law.

Operatives Dismantle 8 Illegal Refining Sites in Delta

Operatives of the Nigerian Navy Forward Operating Base in Escravos have deactivated eight illegal refining sites at Obodo Omadino in Warri South West Local Government Area of Delta State.

The exercise, which was carried out in three different operations, led to the seizure of 20,710 litres of stolen crude oil and 3,225 litres of illegally refined AGO.

According to the Commanding Officer, Forward Operating Base (FOB), Escravos, Navy Captain Ikenna Okoloagu, yesterday, the seized products were discovered in two locally fabricated ovens, 66 dugout pits and 43 polythene sacks.

In addition, he disclosed that the Base arrested three suspects and seized two boats.

Captain Okoloagu said the operatives on June 6, 2025, acting on actionable intelligence dismantled three illegal refining sites at Obodo Omadino, Warri South-West LGA, Delta State containing 4,660 litres of stolen crude oil and 1,125 litres of illegally refined AGO stored across one oven, 19 dugout pits and 15 polythene sacks.

He said the operatives again on June 13,2025, dismantled another two sites at Oteghele, also within Obodo Omadino, leading to the recovery of 8,400 litres of stolen crude oil stored in 21 dugout pits.

Maintaining operational momentum, Navy Captain Okoloagu said the operatives again on June 15, following credible intelligence of illegal crude oil siphoning at Chevron Nigeria Limited Malu Jacket 19, offshore Escravos, an Anti-Crude Oil Theft team was deployed.

“On arrival, the team discovered a wooden boat connected to the platform via a hose, siphoning crude oil. The boat, fitted with a 40HP Yamaha outboard engine, was seized and three suspects were arrested” he added.

The Naval boss disclosed that another one speedboat fitted with 200HP Yamaha outboard engine was also impounded during the operation.

Okoloagu stated that the successful operations were carried out based on credible intelligence and in support of Operation Delta Sanity II, which underscores the commitment of FOB Escravos to the Strategic Directives of the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral EmmanueI Ogalla, Admiralty Medal, aimed at eradicating all forms of illegalities within Nigeria’s maritime environment.

“In support of efforts to boost Nigeria’s daily crude oil production quantity, Nigerian Navy personnel attached to Forward Operating Base (FOB) Escravos will continue to sustain the fight against crude oil theft, pipeline vandalism, and other acts of economic sabotage in the Niger Delta region,” he stated.

ASEAN Diplomatic Missions Commit to Strengthening Bilateral Ties With Nigeria

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) diplomatic missions in Nigeria, including Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam, have pledged to deepen bilateral ties with Nigeria.

The pledge was made on Thursday evening in Abuja during the “Essence of ASEAN” festival reception hosted by the High Commission of Malaysia in Nigeria in partnership with Embassies of Philippines, Indonesia , Thailand and Vietnam.

ASEAN, is a regional grouping of 10 states in Southeast Asia “that aims to promote economic and security cooperation among its 10 members.”

The High Commissioner of Malaysia, Mr. Aiyub Omar, who is also the current chairman of the ASEAN Committee in Abuja, highlighted the festival’s importance in fostering understanding and collaboration between ASEAN member countries and Nigeria.

He said, “Malaysia has been a partner to Nigeria since 1965, and this year marks the 60th anniversary of our bilateral relations

“This festival aims to raise awareness of ASEAN’s cultural offerings and opportunities in Nigeria, where interest in travel to Malaysia has surged, with over 300 applications from Nigerians to visit the country each month.

“Additionally, more than 3,000 Nigerians are currently studying in Malaysian universities, both public and private.

“There are so many travellers now travelling to Malaysia, for instance in a month, we receive about more than 300 applications for Nigerians to travel to Malaysia.”

The envoy also noted that ASEAN diplomatic missions rotate the chairmanship every six months, which helps maintain a dynamic engagement among member states.

Also speaking, Philippines Ambassador, Mr. Mersole Mellejor, called for greater awareness of ASEAN among Nigerians, stating that efforts must be made to increase exposure and understanding of ASEAN’s aspirations as a vital partner in Africa.

He said, “The common people of Nigeria need to know what ASEAN represents and our aspirations.”

He also stressed the importance of increasing ASEAN’s visibility and engagement with Nigeria, recognising the potential of collaborating within a collective market of nearly one billion people across ASEAN and West Africa.

On his part, the Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, expressed appreciation for the support and emphasised Nigeria’s strong connections with ASEAN countries, stating how collaboration in trade and tourism are crucial for mutual economic growth.

Tuggar, who was represented by Ambassador Janet Olisa, Director of Regions in the Foreign Affairs Ministry pointed out that ASEAN has a lot to offer in terms of educational exchange programmes, leveraging the robust network of institutions available in the region.

He said, “ASEAN has taught us that the first thing you need to do is trade among yourself, tourism among yourself, before you go out.

“So you have to build each other’s economy, each other’s trade and we borrowed the lead from the West African Economic Summit taking place tomorrow for all West African countries.

“So we are talking about how we grow together economically. Have a lot of collaboration with most of the ASEAN countries. Malaysia has a very robust scholarship exchange programme that they do provide. Same with Indonesia, Thailand, Philippines, Vietnam and the other five countries.”

APC Chieftain Applauds Tinubu’s Pardon for Ken Saro-Wiwa

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, Chief Government Tigidam, has commended President Bola Tinubu for granting pardon to Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight other Ogoni activists, during his broadcast marking the Democracy Day.

Tigidam, who is the Leader of APC in Khana Local Government Area of the state, also thanked the Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and Dumnamene Dekor, Member representing Khana/Gokana federal constituency, for their roles in ensuring that the Ogoni nine received justice.

Tigidam, who spoke in Port Harcourt, yesterday, said the President’s action is a significant step towards healing the wounds of the Ogoni people and promoting reconciliation.

He expressed optimism that the gesture would bring about a new era of peace and development in Ogoniland.

“I want to commend President Bola Tinubu for this bold step, which demonstrates his commitment to justice and reconciliation. I am confident that the national honour will soon be extended to the late Ogoni Four, and this will facilitate the healing and reconciliation process.

At West African Economic Summit, Eneanya Chukwuemeka Calls for Fair Trade, Economic Reforms

At the ongoing West African Economic Summit, economist and Africapitalist, Eneanya Chukwuemeka, made a strong case for urgent reforms across Africa’s trade, production, and economic systems, emphasizing the need for a Fair African Trade Policy.

In an exclusive interview during the summit, Chukwuemeka highlighted the need to engage manufacturers and policymakers to restructure Africa’s position in global value chains.

He said, “We must speak to manufacturers if we want fair African trade. We are still producing at the natural output level rather than transforming into secondary, value-added production. We need to start asking: What percentage of the products we consume are actually made in Africa?” he stated.

Chukwuemeka stressed that every small business is the foundation of a large enterprise, and supporting them is critical to Africa’s development.

According to him,

“We must differentiate between the free trade of foreign goods flooding the continent and the free trade of African-made goods. Our policies must first solve the African problem through domestic savings, good governance, and strong institutional coordination,” Chukwuemeka urged.

The economist called for a drastic reduction in the export of raw materials in favor of value-added production within the continent.

“This is how we fix inflation, stabilize prices, and restructure our economies for real impact,” he emphasized.

He also advocated for AI adoption, digitalization, and blockchain technology to drive transparency, innovation, and leapfrog development challenges.

“We must build digital systems and infrastructures that empower small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to compete globally,” Chukwuemeka said.

Chukwuemeka did not shy away from calling out the insurance sector, stating that insurance companies are not doing enough to support business risk-taking.

“Insurance and guarantees can make all the difference. And at the national level, we must ensure proper coordination so policies are effectively implemented.”

Ignore Self-acclaimed Ijaw Contractors Forum, DESOPADEC Contractors Urge Oborevwori, Board

The Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC) Contractors Forum has urged Delta State Governor, Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, and the board of the commission to ignore some self acclaimed Ijaw Ethnic Nationality Contractors Forum undermining the interventionist agency.

The chairman of the forum, Mr. Ogie Samson, in a statement issued Saturday, said DESOPADEC Contractors Forum comprises all contractors of ethnic groups, noting that there is no group such as DESOPADEC Ijaw Ethnic Nationality Contractors Forum.

Samson was reacting to a publication by a group claiming to be DESOPADEC Ijaw Ethnic Nationality Contractors Forum berating the commission’s board over non-payment of contracts and issuance of a six-point demand.

He said the signatories to the publication were not known to the DESOPADEC Contractors Forum and had no right to claims of non-payment for jobs that were not verified either by the board or the forum.

“DESOPADEC Indigenous Contractors Forum is reacting to an inappropriate publication by some persons over claiming non-payment of said named contractors.

“It is a clear fact that DESOPADEC Indigenous Contractors Forum comprises all oil producing areas ethnic nationalities or indigenes who are contractors in DESOPADEC, and it should also come to the notice of His Excellency, Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, the amiable governor of Delta State that payments go to all ethnic nationalities involved in our forum,” he added.

Samson noted that though his members are hopping for better payments but maintained that the signatories to the publication and letter in the subject matter are not known to be executives of DESOPADEC Indigenous Contractors Forum.

“Whatever claims they are making is made out of self benefits and should not be acknowledged. You don’t just wake up out of the blue, break out of a forum that you were never part of and create a forum as if people in DESOPADEC are not educated to understand what forgery is,” he added.

Samson gave names of the ethnic nationalities representatives in the forum as Chairman of DESOPADEC Indigenous Contractors, Mr. Ogie Samson (Itsekiri representative); Secretary, Prince Charles Ebigbagha (ijaw representative); PRO, Hon. Patrick Oghenemu (representing Isoko); Mr Henry Ugboriata and many other members.

He said the forum has been having harmonious dialogue with the Chief Executive Director, SOS, Chief Favour Zuokumo, and Hon. Spencer Okpoye, who are ijaw representatives in DESOPADEC as management team.

Samson acknowledged that payments were being made to DESOPADEC contractors across the five ethnic nationalities and not as been speculated.

“Recently, the Executive Director, Social Service, Chief Favour Zuokumo and commissioner representing ijaw ethnic nationalities, Hon. Spencer Okpoye had a robust meeting with the Forum Excos and members, so we are surprised at these publication,” he said.

Samson maintained that the relationship between the management of DESOPADEC and the indigenous contractors forum is intact with payments made monthly, though there were challenges and demands brought before the management which were yet to be considered

The DESOPADEC Contractors Forum chairman however appealed to Governor Oborevwori to release funds to the interventionist agency to enable it meet its obligations to its members.

“We want to use this medium to appeal to His Excellency Hon Sheriff Oborevwori, the Governor of Delta State, for release of funds to accommodate the already accrued debt burden of the commission owed to contractors,” he added.

Marwa’s Mother-in-law, Hajiya Zainab Hussain, Dies at 76

Hajiya Zainab Hussain, mother-in-law to the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Brig Gen Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd), is dead.

Hajiya Hussain who is the mother of Hajiya Munira Marwa, wife of Gen. Marwa, died in the early hours of Saturday in Abuja at 76.

A statement by the family said the funeral prayer (Janazah) will take place today at 2:00pm at the National Mosque, Abuja.

The statement said the funeral prayer would be followed immediately by interment at Gwarinpa Cemetery, Abuja.

In a statement issued Saturday by his Media Assistant, Stanley Nkwocha, the vice-president described the incident as a heinous act of terrorism against innocent civilians.

He urged relevant agencies to expedite investigations into the incident and ensure that victims and families of the deceased receive urgent support.

Shettima expressed the Federal Government’s commitment to bringing the perpetrators to justice, even as he extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and the people of Borno State.

According to him, “The Federal Government will not relent in our efforts to ensure that those responsible for this despicable act face the full weight of the law.

“Our hearts go out to the families who have lost loved ones in this senseless act of violence. The government stands with them in this difficult time and will provide all necessary support.

“The administration of President Bola Tinubu remains committed to restoring lasting peace and security to the North-east and all parts of Nigeria. We will not allow our enemies to undermine the progress we have made in degrading their capabilities.”
