Tanker explosion: Police confirm 73 persons dead, others in critical condition
The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed the death of 73 persons following the tragic tanker explosion that occurred at the Dikko Junction, Abuja-Kaduna Expressway, Niger State, on Saturday.
DAILY POST earlier reported that a truck loaded with Premium Motor Spirit, PMS, also known as petrol lost control and eventually caught fire, claiming at least 50 lives.
However, a statement issued on Sunday morning by the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi said about 73 dead bodies were recovered from the scene.
Our correspondent gathered that the death toll may rise as several persons, who were critically injured, are currently battling for life.
The statement said the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun also extended “heartfelt condolences to the government and the good people” of the state.
The IGP, while emphasizing the importance of strict adherence to safety protocols on roads across the nation, warns firmly against the “negligence and disregard for regulations that can lead to such catastrophic incidents”.
The police boss directed all State Commissioners of Police to “strengthen their Motor Traffic Divisions (MTDs) of their respective State Commands, in collaboration with other traffic management agencies, to ensure strict compliance and enforcement of established protocols and traffic regulations on highways”.
The IGP further charged vehicle owners and drivers to “ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy and abide by the traffic rules in order to prevent any tragedies”.

Russia’s Defence Ministry on Saturday said its forces took control of two more settlements in eastern Ukraine’s Donetsk region, the latest in a series of gains it has reported in its steady advance westward.
According to the ministry’s statement, Russian forces were now in control of Petropavlivka, a village between the towns of Pokrovsk and Kurakhove, focal points in fighting in recent months in the area.
The statement also noted the capture of Vremivka, one of a cluster of small towns further south in the Donetsk region.
It also said Russian forces hit Ukraine’s military facilities with high-precision weapons in response to an Ukrainian attack on Russia’s southern Belgorod region with U.S.-made ATACMS missiles.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian military statements made no mention of either of the two villages changing hands, but referred to heavy fighting near the key city of Pokrovsk.
The spokesperson for the Ukrainian military’s Khortytsya group of forces dismissed for the second day running any notion that Russian forces had entered Pokrovsk.
“There have been no developments in Pokrovsk, things are stable,” Viktor Trehubov told national television. “The enemy is not there.”
The city is a transport hub and site of Ukraine’s only coking coal pit, where work was suspended this week.
Russia’s military, after failing to advance on the capital Kyiv in the weeks following its February 2022 invasion of Ukraine, has since focused its efforts of capturing all of the Donbas – made up of Donetsk and Luhansk regions.
It now holds about 20% of Ukraine’s territory.
The Ukrainian military’s General Staff, in a late night report, said Russian forces trying to pierce Ukrainian defences had launched 84 attacks in the Pokrovsk sector.
Fourteen battles were still raging in the area.
The report listed a series of villages in the sector which it said had come under Russian attack — including three which Russia’s military said it secured in the past week and another where Russia said it took control last month.

Describing the incident as a heartbreaking tragedy, Lokpobiri extended his heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Niger State, as well as the families of the victims.
“I am deeply saddened by this tragic event, and my thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved families,” he said in a statement issued on Saturday by his Special Adviser on Media and Communication, Nneamaka Okafor.

“I have appealed this severally; the risks are enormous, and lives are too precious to be lost unnecessarily.”
The Minister disclosed that he had directed the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) to commence an investigation into the incident.
He also reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to ensuring the safety of petroleum transportation across the country.

Speaking on the significance of building trust and touting the Conservative Party as the right group to fix Britain, the Nigeria-born UK politician likened a possibility of the UK becoming like Nigeria if the system is not reformed.
“And why does this matter so much to me? It’s because I know what it is like to have something and then to lose it,” Badenoch told the audience. I don’t want Britain to lose what it has.
“I grew up in a poor country and watched my relatively wealthy family become poorer and poorer, despite working harder and harder as their money disappeared with inflation.
“I came back to the UK aged 16 with my father’s last £100 in the hope of a better life.
“So I have lived with the consequences of terrible governments that destroy lives, and I never, ever want it to happen here,” she said.
The Conservative Party leader’s comments are a resumed criticism of Nigeria, her country of origin, an approach which has provoked disapproval from Nigerian leaders, including a rebuke from Vice-President Kashim Shettima.

Before she was elected leader of the Tories, Badenoch described Nigeria as a socialist nation brimming with thieving politicians and insecurity.

Following Saturday’s explosion in Niger State that claimed over 50 lives and left many others severely injured, the Controller-General of the Federal Fire Service, FFS, Engr. Abdulganiyu Jaji, has asked fuel station owners and tanker operators to take immediate action in addressing reckless driving by their drivers.
DAILY POST reported that over 50 persons lost their lives in a petrol tanker explosion along Dikko-Maje road, opposite Badeggi filling station, in Suleja LGA of Niger State, on Saturday.
According to the Niger State Emergency Management Agency, NSEMA, the incident occurred after a tanker loaded with Premium Motor Spirit, PMS, crashed, and an attempt was made to transfer its contents to another tanker.
In the process, the PMS came into contact with a generator used to effect the transfer, triggering an explosion that consumed over 50 persons, most of whom had gathered to scoop the spilling fuel.
Reacting to the incident in an interview with journalists, the Federal Fire Service Controller-General, Jaji, warned against reckless driving by tanker drivers, especially on major roads and dangerous bends.
He also stressed the need for an urgent review of safety protocols governing fuel transportation across the country.
The Federal Fire Service boss expressed concern over the rising frequency of tanker explosions and fuel station fire incidents. According to him, a small static spark or gas leak can result in rapid, deadly explosions.
Jaji equally warned against the dangers of scooping fuel from fallen tankers, a practice which he described as a fatal risk.
He said, “Fuel vapors and leaks can ignite at any moment. Your life is worth more than a few liters of fuel.”
Jaji urged members of the public to avoid fuel tanker accident sites and instead contact the Federal Fire Service for prompt intervention, to avoid tragic consequences.
In the same vein, Jaji called on Nigerians, particularly operators of fuel stations, gas refilling plants, and users of gas cylinders, to strictly follow safety measures to prevent further catastrophic events.
He condoled the families affected by the Niger fuel tanker explosion, asking for divine strength to help them cope with their loss.
He also commended the first responders for their dedication, which he described as a testament to the nation’s resilience.
Jaji stressed the importance of prioritizing safety and public awareness to prevent similar incidents in the future, noting, “Every life is precious, and we must do everything in our power to protect our citizens.”
He reiterated the Federal Fire Service’s commitment to enhancing safety awareness and called for the swift passage of the Fire Service Act of 1963, which is currently under review in the National Assembly.
According to him, the existing law is outdated, hence inadequate to address current fire safety challenges and needs to be modernized to regulate fire safety measures better and reduce incidents like that in the future.
