His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has concluded months of mediation aimed at resolving the long-running Bawku chieftaincy crisis, after presiding over a rare face-to-face meeting between the opposing factions at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi.
The meeting, held on 1 December at the Jubilee Hall, brought together senior traditional leaders, political figures, academics and youth representatives from both the Mamprusi and Kusasi sides of the conflict. It marked the first time in years that the two groups had engaged in such direct dialogue under the guidance of the Asantehene.
A 30-member delegation led by Chief Tarana John Wuni Grumah represented His Majesty Naa Bohugu Mahami Abdulai Sheriga, the Naayiri and Overlord of Mamprugu. The Kusasi delegation, representing the Bawku Naaba Zugaran Asigri Aburgrago Azoka II, was led by Naba Tambis Baalug, Paramount Chief of Pusiga. Hon. Cletus Avoka spoke for the Kusasi side, while Dr Issah served as spokesperson for the Mamprusi delegation.
A statement issued by the Office of the Asantehene described the engagements as cordial, noting that both parties reaffirmed their shared heritage and insisted that “they are one people who have no reason to be at war with each other.”
The Asantehene commended the delegations for their “civility and maturity,” reminding them that regardless of the final outcome, “they would have to live together as brothers and sisters.” He urged both sides to begin preparing their supporters for peace and to work towards ending the cycle of violence that has plagued the Bawku area for decades.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II announced that he will submit a detailed report on the mediation, including his recommendations, to President John Dramani Mahama in the coming days. The Palace expressed its hope that the President will act swiftly by convening all stakeholders to announce the next steps.
The mediation effort, a significant intervention by traditional authority, is seen as one of the most structured attempts in recent years to secure lasting peace in Bawku, where periodic clashes have disrupted livelihoods and development.
Ghanaians now await the President’s response, as expectations rise that the Asantehene’s intervention could help pave the way for a durable resolution to the longstanding dispute.
