Borno Central Senator Ali Ndume has criticised the Federal Government and the National Assembly for failing to act promptly to counter what he described as the growing “misconception” about religious persecution in Nigeria before the United States reclassified the country as a “Country of Particular Concern”.

DAILY POST reports that former United States President Donald Trump, on Friday, via his Truth Social platform, declared Nigeria a Country of Particular Concern, alleging that “Christianity is facing an existential threat in the country.”

Trump also ordered that Nigeria be placed on the watchlist for “particularly severe violations of religious freedom.”

Reacting in a statement on Saturday, Ndume avowed that both the Tinubu administration and the Senate ignored earlier warnings and failed to engage Washington diplomatically before the redesignation was announced.

“I have alerted the government; I even moved a motion. Nigeria is a sovereign state. It isn’t about what the United States can do to us, but about the misconception and the ripple effects of classifying us as a country of concern.

“We should engage the American government by presenting facts and figures. By engaging the US government, we should demand that they hear the other side of the story from the Nigerian government and the Muslim community.

“Muslims have been killed, too. The genocide isn’t against Christians but Nigerians generally,” he said.

Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago has stated that the overwhelming turnout of women voters in the local government polls has strengthened his resolve to continue introducing and supporting initiatives that empower women and improve their quality of life.

The governor gave the commendation after casting his vote alongside his wife, Hajiya Fatima Bago, at the Tswashagi Raba polling unit under Landzun Ward, Bida.

He explained, “The large number of women in most of the polling units was encouraging and a demonstration that the women-friendly policies championed by the First Lady of Nigeria, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, and my wife, Hajiya Fatima Umaru Bago, are steps in the right direction.”

He acknowledged some challenges encountered in certain areas but noted that swift action was taken to redeploy election materials to affected locations.

The governor also used the opportunity to thank all security agencies for their efforts in maintaining a peaceful and orderly exercise.

The Northern Elders Forum, NEF, has explained why northern Nigerians must unite against religious and ethnic biases ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The forum stressed that sensitive identity issues must be properly managed in Northern Nigeria—and by extension, across the country—to prevent both the region and the nation from sliding into deeper ethno-religious fragmentation.

The Director-General of the Northern Elders Forum, Professor Doknan Sheni, made this known in a statement on Saturday following a meeting with the National Political Consultative Group held in Abuja.

Sheni called for the restoration of the policy of inclusiveness championed by the late Premier of the Northern Region, Sir Ahmadu Bello.

He noted that for the region to prepare effectively for the 2027 election cycle, massive enlightenment programmes must be undertaken to refocus voters on ideology, principles, and genuine party manifestos—rather than sentimental considerations.

He emphasised that political leaders across party lines must imbibe democratic culture, subordinate personal ambition to national interest, and abandon the “do-or-die” approach to politics.

“If the north is to prepare and unite for the 2027 election, there must be massive enlightenment programmes among the electorate so that the citizens vote based on ideology, principles and real manifestos of parties and candidates and not based on sentiments.

“For the north to unite towards the 2027 elections, there should be a summit of northern leaders sometime in the first quarter of 2026 or thereabouts to harmonise ideas and plan for the elections.

“There may be other political interests by other Nigerians to wedge and exploit political, religious and ethnic differences within northerners so that they could get inroads into the region. If we permit these differences among us to be exploited by other politicians outside our region, then we have agreed to be permanently divided.

“We should do everything possible to narrow and minimise these differences. No matter the cause of the disunity, when we Northerners close ranks and begin to treat one another with respect and with justice, most of the issues causing disunity will disappear. I will try and explore further the internal and external factors that may cause disunity among Northerners,” he stated.

Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia has approved the immediate implementation of the demands made by striking workers of the Moses Orshio Adasu University, Makurdi, Benue State.

This followed negotiations between the government team led by the Secretary to the State Government, Deaconess Serumun Deborah Aber; the institution’s management, led by the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Simon Terver Ubwa; and the university-based unions—ASUU, SSANU, NASU, and NAAT—culminating in a Memorandum of Agreement.

The visitor to the university, Rev. Fr. Dr Hyacinth Iormem Alia, approved the implementation of the contentious issues that had caused industrial disharmony since 2018 with immediate effect.

This was contained in a letter dated October 31, 2025, duly signed by the Permanent Secretary (General Services) on behalf of the Secretary to the State Government.

According to a statement issued on Saturday by the Registrar of the institution, Barnabas Hema, he enumerated the approved demands to include “immediate and complete implementation of the newly approved minimum wage template as presented by the unions.

“Immediate payment of arrears of the minimum wage from November 2023 to date; proper placement and payment of salary entitlements to previously promoted staff of the university. This is with immediate effect, starting with October 2025 salaries.”

He said the government is committed to the payment of arrears of all deferred promotion entitlements to deserving staff.

Hema added that the accumulated promotion entitlements from 2018 would be defrayed at a later date.

He further stated that efforts have been intensified to recruit a new vice-chancellor for the university.

“The Management of the University wishes to express its profound appreciation to the Visitor for addressing all the welfare concerns that have been a source of serious industrial disharmony within the University,” Hema said.

The Lagos State Government has announced temporary traffic diversions in parts of the city ahead of the Cycology X Itel Tour de Nigeria Cycling Race, scheduled to take place on Sunday, November 2, 2025, between 7 am and 11 am.

According to the Lagos State Sports Commission, the 60-kilometre race will commence at Dolphin Loop, passing through Osborne Road, Ring Road, Third Mainland Bridge, Iyana Oworo, Gbagada Expressway, Oshodi Oke, and the MMIA Underbridge (U-turn), before returning to Dolphin Estate for the finish line.

In a statement released on Friday, the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, advised motorists from Ikeja heading towards Victoria Island to use Ikorodu Road via Funsho Williams Avenue and connect through Eko Bridge.

“For those coming from Mowe or along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, motorists should take the Ojota Slip Road to Ikorodu Road, then proceed through Funsho Williams Avenue to Eko Bridge,” Osiyemi stated.

He clarified that the Third Mainland Bridge would remain open to traffic throughout the event, though movement would be strictly regulated to ensure the safety of participants and road users.

“All adjoining roads will be opened intermittently as cyclists progress along the route,” he added.

The Commissioner assured that the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, in collaboration with the Nigeria Police, would be on ground to manage vehicular movement and maintain public order.

He stressed that no road would be completely closed and that vehicular access would be permitted at controlled intervals.

Osiyemi appealed to motorists to plan their trips early, use designated alternative routes, and exercise patience during the brief diversion, noting that the measures were designed to ensure a safe and hitch-free event for both participants and residents.

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, has condemned a violent attack on its personnel during an enforcement operation at the Trade Fair Complex in Lagos State.

In a statement on Friday, the agency’s Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, revealed that the incident occurred on Thursday, October 30, during a raid targeting the sale and distribution of counterfeit and unwholesome products.

Adeyeye, who was represented by Dr Martins Iluyomade, the agency’s Director of Investigation and Enforcement, said the operation turned chaotic after some traders allegedly hired armed thugs to obstruct NAFDAC officials.

“The operation commenced peacefully until hired mercenaries, wielding dangerous weapons, invaded the scene. They disrupted our activities and demanded to know the identity of the Federal Task Force director leading the operation,” she said.

According to Adeyeye, several cartons of fake, banned, and substandard products were confiscated before the mob descended on the officials. The seized items were found in violation of the Counterfeit and Fake Drugs and Unwholesome Processed Foods (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, Cap. C.34 LFN 2004.

She disclosed that the attackers vandalised about ten operational vehicles belonging to NAFDAC and its security partners, with damages estimated at over N25 billion.

Adeyeye lamented that the latest assault mirrored a similar attack on NAFDAC officers in 2022, which forced one of the affected personnel to resign due to injuries sustained.

“We risk our lives daily to protect the health of Nigerians. Unfortunately, this is part of the danger we face in the course of duty. Anyone dealing in fake products is committing a grave crime, and we will not relent in tackling this menace,” she stated.

The NAFDAC boss said intelligence reports received months earlier had warned of a possible attack linked to previous enforcement operations in the same market.

Despite the violence, Adeyeye confirmed that officers successfully evacuated four truckloads of seized counterfeit goods before the situation escalated. However, several other confiscated items had to be abandoned due to safety concerns.

She commended the Nigerian Police and military personnel for their swift intervention and professionalism, which she said prevented the incident from resulting in casualties.

Reaffirming the agency’s zero-tolerance stance on fake and substandard products, Adeyeye vowed that NAFDAC would not be intimidated by threats or violent resistance.

“We remain resolute in our mission to eliminate counterfeit drugs and unsafe food products from the Nigerian market. No level of intimidation will deter us,” she declared.
