NEMA releases updates on flood devastation
The National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, on Wednesday, released fresh update on flood devastation and casualties in states and local government areas across the country.
According to a statement issued on the 18th of September 2024, NEMA said 1,092,317 persons have been affected, with 641,798 displaced from their homes.
The agency also disclosed that 99,046 houses have been destroyed with 285 deaths recorded.
NEMA further announced that 2,504 injuries were sustained, and 127,544 hectares of farmlands washed away.
It added that 185 local government areas in 31 states were affected.

NAF orders probe into civilian casualty claims after Katsina airstrike
The Air Component of Operation FASAN YANMA successfully carried out an airstrike at Yauni Hill, Zakka Ward in Safana Local Government Area of Katsina State, neutralizing several bandits and helping to repel an attack on personnel from the Police Mobile Force and the Katsina State Community Watch Corps.
According to a statement by the Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Vice Marshal Olusola Akinboyewa, the operation was launched following intelligence reports of an imminent terrorist attack on a Police Mobile Force location in the community. Before the intervention, bandits had already killed two police personnel and four vigilantes.
In a swift response, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) deployed air assets for an interdiction mission. Upon arrival, the targets were identified and engaged.
However, reports alleging civilian casualties as a result of the airstrikes have raised concerns. In response, the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Hassan Abubakar, has ordered a thorough investigation to verify these claims and ensure appropriate action is taken based on the findings.
However, NAF insisted that as a professional force committed to safeguarding Nigeria and its citizens, the NAF operates under strict rules of engagement and adheres to internationally recognized standards in all its operations.
