Six Palestinians killed as Israeli Forces launch major operation in Jenin
At least six Palestinians were killed, and 35 others wounded, as Israeli security forces launched a significant operation in Jenin, a city in the occupied West Bank, on Tuesday.
The Palestinian health ministry confirmed the casualties following a series of drone strikes and a ground incursion by Israeli military vehicles into Jenin and its refugee camp.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the operation as “extensive and significant,” aiming to “defeat terrorism” in the area.
He stated it was a methodical effort to strengthen security in the West Bank, framing it as part of a broader strategy against perceived threats from Iran and its proxies.
An Israeli military statement identified the operation as “Iron Wall,” which it said would continue “as long as necessary.”
Jenin’s governor, Kamal Abu al-Rub, referred to the operation as an “invasion” of the camp, with reports of Apache helicopters overhead and a heavy presence of Israeli military vehicles on the ground.
The assault follows a weeks-long Palestinian security campaign targeting armed groups like Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad, which are viewed as a challenge to Palestinian Authority control.
Violence in the West Bank has surged since Hamas’s deadly attack on Israel on 7 October 2023 and the subsequent war in Gaza.
Israeli forces have intensified raids in the West Bank, citing efforts to prevent further attacks on Israelis.
The ongoing conflict remains aggravated by the presence of approximately 700,000 Jewish settlers in the West Bank.
These settlements, established since Israel’s occupation during the 1967 Middle East war, are widely considered illegal under international law—a claim disputed by Israel.
